WHAT HE MEANN TO 110.
“Iu the first place, then, I want
you distinctly to understand that
I am not a candidate for governor,
nor am I a candidate even for nom
ination to that office by any patiy
in Georgia. I think all that is
being now said in the papers of
Georgia upon that subject grew
out of a remark of mine that you
reported sonto time ago, that if I he
peoplo of Georgia really wished
me to serve them as governor, as
numerous lettors received by me
indicate, I knew no reason nt that
time, if ray health continued as
good as it then was, which would
justify me in refusing so to serve
them, though my own wishes ami
desires were, as they had been re
peatedly declared, to retire from
public life at the expiration of ray
present congressional term. This
about Fremont's troops, ami lie j the steamboat agent at this iaml-
X now repeat. By this languu,
do not mean to announce myselfus
a candidate or even an aspirant
for tho governorship, but to ex
press a simple willingness to serve
as govornor il the people in an
authoritative manner should ex
press a wish for me to sorve them
A BUMOll DENIED.
, “Is there any authority for the
statement that you will accept the
nomination for governor by the
moss meeting advertised to be held
in Atlanta, outlie first, of June,
and representing what is called l.he
coalition party in Georgia?”
“None, whatever, though
should not be disregarded of such
an expression of coaUdcnce by any
number of citizens of the state,
and the more so, coming from men
not of my own political associa
tion.”
A NOMINATION WOULD BE ACCEPTABLE.
“If a convention of the democrat
ic party, Bclcotcd under the com
mon usages of tho party, should
nominate you lor governor, would
you accept the nomination?”
“I should toko that certainly os
such a demonstration of popular
confidence and the will of the' peo
ple as would meet the contingency
under which I have stated my will
ingness to serve in that capacity to
the best of my ability, and I
should accept the trust looking
after the rights and interests of all
classes without regard to party or
ganization, but with tho object in
view ot restoring harmony to the
entire state, building our waste
places and restoring the old com
monwealth as fsr as possible to ber
former proud position In the sister
hood of the states of the union.”
The English steamer Greenock,
Captain G. B. Taylor, Irom Hartle
pool, North England, Is now in the
port of Brunswick, taking a cargo
of timber. The cargo is to consist
of 100,000 feet of square timber,
which is to be got on board in six
days from the time of the steamer’s
arrival. The Grccuock is furnish
ed witli three steam winches, calla
ble of lifting the heaviest slicks
from tho water over the rails and
lowering them down through the
hatcliL., which are twenty-four feet ■
length. .Mr. U. K. Walker, of |
Darieu, is shipper of the cargo,
said:
“Stranger, I’d like to Iced that
boss, bin my old mulo lias had to
browse mighty line to keep on his
legs this fall.”
Then wc talked about Stonewall
Jackson anil his march up that
road and the farmer branched off
with:
“Stranger, I would liko to olffir
ye a driuk o’sumthin’ warmiu, but
fact is I liaint seen a piut o’ whis
ky since tho war.
Then I inquired how fur it,was
to Pt. Republic, and whether the
bridge (tail been rebuilt, and he
answered nto and. added:
“Stranger, I do feel as I ortcr
ask ye in to see the family, but the
old woman’s down witli cills, Sal’s
otf over the ridge, and the lire went
out an hour ago.”
I mounted my horse and handed
him a cigar. That broke him up.
Jit: turned it over, looked up and
down tho roati and from me ‘lo
the house, and finally seized my
leg and exclaimed:
"Stranger, I’m poor and way
down anti sometime wicked, but
I’m right tlmr’ when a mun culls
my hand I 1 can’t feed ye, nor warm
ye, uor give yo whiskey nor to-

that boss and come over to tho
spring and havo soino water witli
me I’ll never forgive ye on airtli
And we drank to his luuk.

Sheep liaising an Colton Plantations
It scorns to me there is u plan of
farming practicable in the South
that would solve the labor question,
enrich the lands, enrich the farmer
and make things look little bright
er Ilian all cotton, no money, no
grub, no clothes, anil big debts.
Suppose a planter having 400 acres
of land, which be has always eulti-
ntvctl in cotton, should divide his
innn into four Holds one of which
he sows iu Bermuda, Japan clover,
orchard grass, white clover, blue-
gnss, red clover or any kind of
grass that u sheep, cow or horse
would eat; then in field peas, one
in corn and one in cotton.
Then gel 400 head of sheep—any
kind will do; graze the sheep on
till peas arc ripe, then put the sheep
during winter on the cotton seetl
grown on the ground; this will
make it rieh enough to grow a
crop of cotton without manure;
keep up this rotation and soon all
the farm will be rioli, and the pro
fits of the sheep will pay family ex
penses, or the shuep may be 'sold
as fat after January and they will
pay 100 per cent, on the invest
ment. Sheep raising on plantations
in ten years would enrich every
acre of land and. every farmer in
the Sooth. There is no people in
the world that works so hard, have
so little of the comforts of life, as
ho who plants all ootton to bny his
meat and bread.
Mr. Oliphat is right. All our
troubles come from a wunt of
brains, or at least, a proper use
of what wo liavo. This whole trou
ble can be solved iu a u few words:
plant less cotton, more corn wheat,
oats, peas and grass. The fact Is,
no people on earth ever throve or
ever will without gross to graze
stock on. The cotton states can
handle 40,000,000 sheep, and they
will make ten times as much
nuinure as is now purchased.—
B. I. I .aril in Southern Cultivator.
“I suppose I am,” said the
white-haired fellow iu a languid
tone.
“ Well they tell me you used to
steal freight.”
“Oil, they do! Well, you tell ’em
they lie.”
“Look here, sir!” said Berry,
assuming the appearance ofange'r,
“that won’t do. I want you to un
derstand that I am authorized lo
investigate this matter, and I
won’t havo any nonsense about it
either.”
“You won’t, eh ? Well I’m glad
of that.”
“No sir. I won’t. 1 propose to
probo tiiis thing to the bottom, and
you must auswer my questions cat
egorically.”
“Now see here, young man,”
said the white-haired ’non per
suasively, “yonr’re trying to have
some fun with me—but don’t you
think you’d better stop whero you
arc and go away? ’Tisn’t very
tunny to accuse a gentleman of
stealing, and I have not been used
to it.”
“Funny or not,” said I’orry, “I
think that it is true, and that wc
havo got you fairly caught at
last.”
Tlie white-haired tuuu shifted
his quid, his gray eves twinkled,
and—he took his hands out or
his pockets. Something dropped
into tho water.
Fifty-five seconds later Petty,
spouting river water from a dam
aged countenance, was devoting
the muscle which hail been adver
tised for an entirely different exhi
bition to nn earnest effort to swiui
ashore.
Then the white-haired man, re
suming an attitude of pensive ease,
winked lazily nt the group on the
deck and said, with what seemed
to them to contain a fnint flavor of
sarensm:
“I»o you suppose that there’s
anybody else on board that wnnts
to have some fun witli mo?”
And the chatty newspaper man
sat down and wrote a thrilling ac
count of It for his paper, remarking
at the close that the, white-haired
man shocked and disgusted the
mssungers bv the inexcusable lev-
ty with which he treated the very
serious charges brought against
him, and that he had roused such a
irofound hostility in the neighbor-
mod that no steamboat company
