couragement. It is not necessary
for -Mr. Stephens to no a candidate
in order to “save the state,” and
he can well afford to adhere to his
first expressed determination to re
tire to the shades of private life.

of the fact we would as soon touch

earnestly supported by the inde
pendent press, who doubtless think

ty to their movement that nothing
else can. Mr. Stephens announces
that he will run as a democratic
candidate, and surely he cannot
mean by this an epeusal of or even
compromise with the coalitionists.
