! (wed iing promenade) over the
sunny plain was also charming, for
there were the fichus and the red
skirts of the peasant girls, the light-
colored white, pink, or sky-blue
costumes of the several brides
maids and of the other young girls
in the party against the green back
ground of the growing wheat, look
ing at a distance like poppies and
bluebells and marguerites s| ring
ing up in the well tilled fields. The
long procession wound its way
along the rural path proceeded by
two musicians covered with ribbon,
one playing on a violin, the other
on a eornet-a-piston, en route for
i be hamlets where the Imppy
husband was to introduce his wife
to new friends nnd relations. In
the public square of each hamlet
the young people Imd spread out
tables, and ottered the vin d’honn-
to the bride, with an accompaui
meut of music and the firing of
guns, after which the procession,
swollen by the addition of all the
boys and girls of tlie.plaee, passed
on to the next hamlet. In the ev
ening there was a grand feast—a
pantagruclesque feed in the barn,
with open wine casks' and barrels
of bear, at which every one could
at will replenish his or her inn
and this lasted all the next day,
anil the day after that also.
In the month of October, 1870,
the Unudcs inhabited a little isola
ted bouse situated on the edge ol'a
forest. One day while the father
and mother were at work in the
fields their little girl Julia was left
in charge of the house. She was
then only seven years old, but bad
already manifested a rare intelli
gence and an energy that is seldom
to be met with in one so young.
For two months or so she had been
bearing stories ot the exactions, of
the cniorccd services, and of the
outrages committed by the Prus
sian invadors, who had become all
the more cruel on account of the in
visible bands of francs-tircurs who
killed a great many German sol
diers from behind ambuscades.
Julia was standing at the door
bis comrade,- who remained stand- [ and depots are extortioners when
ing, and who was also deeply in
terested in the scene.
“I say,” asked Julia, “have you
also a little girl?”
The Prussian turned pale and
his face grew sad. “Yes, I have a
dear, good little girl at home,” lie
said.
“Ah, then you may kiss me.”
He pressed her elose to his heart,
and the tears tell down on his thick,
fair heard; and then they both
mounted their horses and rode
away. When they wero gone the |
lad came out of his hiding place |
and ran into the forest. It was this I
same young fellow, saved by the j
intelligence, the coolness, and the I
childish grace of little Julia 11a-,
vaude, who, when she was eighteen I
years old. came and asked for her
hand; and it was their wedding
promenade which I have told you
about.

He who charges the south with
indolence should see what has been
accomplished since 18K5. Every
town from Chattanooga to Atlanta
was laid in ashes. Not a hundred
fruit trees were left between the
two points. Not a rail w.is left on
any farm—hardly a farm house
or barn. Thousands of people were
left without food, or clothing, or
money, or tools. It was a barren,
ravage scene of desolation, and
men said it could not recover in
fifty years. Hut behold the change.
No where in the north lias the hand
ot thrift ami pluck worked such
wonders in so short a time. Towns
which wore of wood are now of
brick. Public buildings have been
rebuilt in far better style, improve
ments have been made in streets,
iron bridges have replaced wood,
and bill and valley a-.e drinking in
the sunshine of peace and yielding
immense crops.
INDUSTRY IN (IE0UU1A.
Georgia is turning out almost
every agriculsurul tool needed in
the state, and many other things
needed in the south at large. She
a stronger is willing to pay, and
impudent as Arabs when he refuses
to be robbed. This higher class

lined is a hero ail next day. Where
freedom and progress have made

it lias offset him with twenty good
fiir-nothiiigs, who live each day on
the principle that the south owes
him a living. M. Quad.

Railroad Oppression of Farmers.
The principle upon which rail
road uharges are nmdc in this coun
try is the same as that upon which
the rack-renting landlords of Ire
land base their claims. Both base
their charges upon “what the traf
fic will bear.”
A Los Angeles farmer, for ex
ample, goes to the office of the
Southern Pacific Railroad and asks
what the charge will be for carry
ing a car load of potatoes to Tuc
son.
•‘What are potatoes selling for
hero?” the agent asks.
“Fifty ccnt3 per 100 pounds.”
“What are they selling for in
Tucson?” •
“Two dollars and a half.”
“Then,” says the agent, “the
charge for carrying your potatoes
will be $2 a hundred.”— Virginia
