THE TWO-THIRDS RULE.

The Butler Herald is for Ste

The Hawkinsvillo Dispatch is
opposed to Stephens’ nomination
for Governor, and favors the nom

The Griffin Sun says that Mr.
Stephens is not its first choice for
Governor. It objects to Mr. Ste

firmity. It compliments the purity
of his character and ids great
statesmanship, but says that Geor
gia wants a younger man.

It is now suggested that when
the District Attorney of Boston
suppressed Walt Whitman's
“Leaves of Grass,’’ on the ground
that it was a work unlit for eyes
and cars polite, he was acting in
collusion with the publishers. At
any rate lie could have thought of
no more certain plan to increase
the salo of the book Rxchamje.
That is not very) complimentary
to the taste of the reading pub
lic.
From tho tones of some of the
Georgia papers it seems that Mr.
Stephens will not have an uninter
rupted walk over into the guberna
torial chair. It la argued that his
inflrmllics incapacitate him for the
work incumbent upou the one who
oooupics the position, and that
this should bo sufficient reasons
for tho nomination of another.
Whatever may linve been tho pol t
ical position of Mr. Stephens in
the pant lie is now thoroughly in
harmony with organized democracy
and anything said to the contrary
will have but little' cflect. lie lias
stated cmphnticaily that lie will not
oppose the democratic nominee,
and that lie will be it candidate
only on terms set fortli by the
etato convention. Whilo there arc
perhaps those who arc better
capacitated for tho duties devolv
ing upon the governor, tlicro are
nono who aro entitled to more con
sideration by tho convention, as lie
occupies the position or auy aspir
ing candidate who is in accord with
organized democracy. The press
and the people have the right to
discuss his candidacy, and to ex
ercise the privilege of voting for
or against him in the nomination.
Tho party docs not belong to Mr.
Stephens, and he lays no such
claims, though some of his enthusi
astic admirers dare to go so far.
TWO SAD SPECTACLES
GEORGIA.
Her eloquent and gifted Senator
lying in an almost helpless condi
tion nl Eureka Springs, and her
whole people mmii-niug in fear of
the loss.
On the other hand, those whom
Georgia lias delighted to honor
are with indecent haste calculating
on their own chances and schem
ing for his place, as if lie were al
ready dead.
It is hard to suy which is the
most to lie mourned—the loss of a
great and gifted man like Mr. Hill,
or the loss of all decency, and sclf-
rospoet, in their over weening de
sire for office, by so many of our
lending politicians.
Thank God, there is little pros
pect of their selfish hope being
realized, for the good news lias
conic that Mr. Hill is improving,
witli good prospects for his ulti
mate recovery. The pcoplo of
Georgia would prefer Mr. Hill as
their Scnntor, flat on his back, at
Eureka Springs during Ids whole
term, to auy of those who liuve
outraged their feelings by their
open and heartless calculations on
the chances of Mr. Hill’s death.

Atlanta, May 29.—Tlie last ol
tlio two silos, constructed about the
first of October under direction ot
tho agricultural department of the
Atlanta cotton exposition, was
opened this morning by Judge
Henderson, the commissioner of
agriculture, nnd several gentlemen
interested in the experiment. When
tho pit was broken open an un-
plcasaut odor arose from an upper
strata of decomposed vegetable
matter about half an inch in thick
ness. This coating being removed
the vines and stalks underneath
were found to be in a state of cX'
eellent preservation. In proper
condition for stock feeding nnd
almost entirely free from .tbo bad
odors of the upper crust! Judge
Henderson and Col. Mark A. Hnr-
dcu, under whose personal super
vision the silo was constructed,
both took a good moutklul and de-
clared it to be very superior sour
krout.
There were about twenty-five
tons of green stuff in the pit, con
sisting of pea vines, corn stalks,
fodder, rag weeds, etc. It was
