Mercury visible.
Mercury, the smallest of the
primary planets, and, as far as is
positively known, tlie nearest to
tlie sun, is now visible to the unas
sisted eye. Just after sunset the
beautiful spectacles present itself to
the observer of Venus, brilliant us
a diamond, and just below it, to
wards tbe ea9t, shines tbe small
planet, Mercury.
Copernicus regretted, on bis
death bed, that he had never seen
Mercury, and many other convert
ed nstromomers never enjoyed the
beautiful spectacle now presented
in onr western sky.
Thx proximity of Mercury to the
sun and his small size render him
difficult ol observation.
Answer to Problem.
Mr. P. A. Hill furnishes an an
swer to the following problem pub
lished last week:
A and B fall heirs to a for
tune of $20,000. B is to have
seven-ninths ns much as A. How
much is B’s share.
As B is lo have seven-ninths a9
much as A, B’s share must be
nine-ninths. Adding A’s and B’s
share, we have sixteen ninths. $20,-
000 being divided by sixteen gives
$1,250, which multiplied respec
tively by 9 and 7 gives $11,250
as B’s share, and $8,750 ns A’s
share.

Tbe Mechanics’ Dance.
As we went to press on Friday
night, it was impossible for us to
get a report of the dance given by
the Mechanic boys at the Barlow

ers that it was one of tbe nicest
of affairs, if not the best, that lias
been given here for several months.
The Albany boys turned out al
most en masse, Kessler played Ids
best, tbe Albany young ladies smil

—God bless them—made some of
tbe Albany boys as Imppy as Kings,
and everything went o i swimmingly
smilingly and smoothly. The Me

of course felt quite elated. The

Tlie visit of tho Albany Ama

in burlesque operas in our city
bitberlo unknown. It is proba

be irilluccd to think that it would

get up a company to present it.
Americus Arrows.
Under this heading the Albany

ing to the visit of the Albany Am
ateurs to Americus:
The amateurs will never forget
the kind’aUentions and ministra
tion of Capt. and Mrs. Clay, of the
Barlow House, and will always
hope lor the hostelrie every pros
perity.
Our crowd was under tlie sole
proprietorship of Bud Collier. He
went Ids whollc cngtli on us, and
his sweet gooiLbye smile seemed
to convey the inuendn that his
iride of the old town of his cliild-
lood had not been in the least
hurt by our coining. Mr. I.ot
Warren and Mr. Jo. Davenport
were on band, too, and many of
tlioir old friends are under obliga
tions to them. Americus has the
coinpletest Opera House of any of
tlie smaller cities. Messrs Glover

cordial to our crowd and took tbo
