yesterday morning of a homicide
in Stewart county, but no pnrtioii-

survivor of this tragedy was in the -

I then remarked: “Yon could
have raised this 'corn at homo in
less time than it has taken you to
haul it from my house, could you
not?”
“No, I reckon not,” was his re
ply.
I then said to him: “Let us mako
a calculation and see if you could
not. Two acres of land on Lime
stone creek, where you live, would

lively, and the prospect now is that
tho race between Gen. Phil Cook
and Judge 0. F. Crisp will bo a
close one. The Irlends or Judge
Crisp in this portion of the District
are not idle, and there ia no use in
denying the fact that be is gaining
[round daily; iii fact it is thought
by some parties, well informed in
regard to the standing of the two
candidates, (Cook and Crisp,) that,
should the majority rule bo adopt
ed in'the convention, the ohanccs
nre decidedly iu favor of the nom
ination of Crisp. Ifthe two thirds

and count their millions. The dis
bursements of the government ox

provement of rivers and harbors
for the erection of public buildings,
and some for the protection of rico
and sugar. This is about all. But
we are pleased to see that oar
Southern members are modestly,

interests by efforts to got a revision
ot tho tariff, preventing the collec
tion of a surplus revenue, reduc
ing the expenses of the Govern
ment, reducing the tax on whisky
and tobacco, the payment of tho
National' debt, and ridding tbo
people of tho annual tax for Inter
est by checking the wild and op
pressive scheme of pensioning
everybody, the tendency of which
Is to build up an aristocracy at the
