BurniugStuiiiiiN.
Mil. Editor—Seeing your re
marks on “burning Rtumps” in
duces to give my experience in
that line.
I first burned the stumps from
twenty acres, then from seventeen
acres, and last fall from thirty acres.
The great difficulty, and the only
difficulty, is digging the hole right.
There can always can be found a
place somewhere around every
stump that lias 110 saterai roots—
get tlie place on tlie side Hie wind
is from, if possible, and dig right
beside tlie stump—no larger at top
than in necessary to pass a [shovel
in and out for removing dirt. Dig
the hole two or two and a half feet
deep as may be ncccssury to let it
go well down by the side ol the
tap root, enlarging the hole at the
bottom so as lo clean the dirt well
away from side of tap root. Then
put in a little tire, not much at a
time, and keep it burning. Do not
let ;thc stump take firs above tlie
ground if avoidable, aud do not
put in too much fuel at once. A
little experience will soon show
how to manage this. He sure to
have your liolo deep enough and
large enough at bottom, well clean
ed out mid not too large at top,
then keep your fire burning. Tlie
stumps I burned were alt pine
stumps witli sap rolled off. I don’t
think it would be practicable to
undertake it on fresh laud where
the timber was all standing. By
the time tlie limber lins nearly all
fallen the oak stumps are gone and
a few trees arc ail advantage in
furnishing fuel. I burned from the
