Box Rent.
Editor Recorder:—The Itepulu
lican says, “tor a long time before
the reduction in P. O. box rent was
made Captain A. C. Bell had earn
estly sought to bring about such a
result,” and that the reduction
“was made at his request and the
request of many citizens.” Now,
Mr. Editor, it is not our purpose
to rob Captain Bell or any ono
else of any just credit. But tho
strange part of this matter, as it
appears to us, is the fact that tho
earnest efforts of Captain Beil and
many citizens did not reach and
engage tho attention of the Post-
office Department. Why do we
say tills? Because the Assistant
Postmaster General in his letter
to you, which you published July
22d, says that no complaint of rent
at this office being too high had
readied the Department, und for
this reason ho declined to order a
reduction. Tills fact alone; wi
think, negatives the statemcn
made by Colonel Hancock. We
do not believe Captain Bell desires
any credit in this matter not due
him; but we think Colonel II. has
exceeded his characteristic journal
istic liberality by not claiming all
the credit to himself.

Preston, Ga., Aug. 14, '82
Dear Times: Seeing that your
valuabto paper has a pretty exten
sive circulation in this county, I
thought probably you would not
object to a local from us occasion
ally. Crops in our section arc as
could lie desired, especially corn,
and the couseqiiencc is every
man you meet is in the best of
spirits.
But the greatest sight in the way
of crops can be seen just three
miles from Preston, on the planta
tion of Mr. W. 1*. Jowers. On
Wednesday of last week one of oiir
merchants and- three ot our most
prominent and successful farmers,
John B. Xicholsjn, John J. Dixon
and J. W. A. Hawkins went over
and looked a*, a portion ol Mr.
.lowers’ cotton crop, but not the
best part of it, hardly by half: and
three of them decided a field of
twenty acres would average at least
two hales of cotton to the acre, and
the other one thinks it will make
I three bales. Hearing Hicso men
talk about the crop, (as 1 had nev
er seen such cotton,) I, in company
with the slicrlfi and ordinary ol
tins county, nnd some others, went
over to Mr. .lowers’ tho following
day and went oVcr a portion of tbe
cotton crop, nnd we are all com
pelled to say, as I have heard
others say, that we never expected
to see such cotton growing. Vfe
arc satisfied that be has one field of
twenty ncrcs that will not make
less than two lialcs to the acre, nnd
some of hr, including Mr. Jowers
himself, think it will make throe
bales to the acre. The field exam
ined by Mr. Nicholson and others
on the day before we went, we
think will make from a hale to a
hale and a half to tho acre. This
statement may appear unreasona
ble to the most of men, but ail they
have to do to be convinced will lie
to pay Mr. Jowers a visit and ex
amine for themselves. Mr. Jowers
also iias an excellent corn crop and
will make a bountiful snpply of corn
and forage.
