Wc have been commissioned to
communicate with you concerning
the building of a monument in
memory of Benjamin II. Ilill. Our
appointment was formally made by
tbc Hill monument association just
now organized, but that organiz
ation organized in demauds which
came from so many parts of tbc
couutry, and were of such char
acter that they could not be resist
ed. The press of Georgia iirst gave
cordial expression of tbc opinion
tbnt some great end durable token
of tlie public esteem for our de

trived. Many letters from various
parts of tbe union, pnrticularl,
from Virginia and Louisiana, ad
dressed to persons in Atlanta, also
called appealingly for memorial
movements to be inaugurated in
tlie capital city ol Georgia. And
tbas in compliance with tbc wishes
of many aflectionatc friends, as well
as in obedience to the dictates of
their own hearts, a number of peo
ple recently assembled and formed
the Hill monument association, to
raise funds nud erect a monument
that shall speak with impressive
and ennobling eloquence for ages
to come.

well worthy of tlie great honor
which ins people desire to conler.
Monuments mark the prevalence of
some lofty sentiments which caus
ed their construction. They honor
us much their builders a9 Lite dis-
tinguised men in whose credit they
wore created. People whose fa
vorites fail are moved by the
noblest motives to call to tlie quar
ries for marble, to the mi ues for
metal, and to man for skill to em
body in appropriate form their
most sacred feeling. Oar country
even in its first century began to
build these mementoes of patriots
in testimony ot the trutli that at
least our republic will not be un
grateful. Georgia also lu s erected
few of tlicso great tokens of pub
lic appreciation. Tlie noble foreign
er, Count Pulaski, who fought and
fell for our liberty on our soil, lias
a monument in Savannah that keeps
him in tlie vivid remembrance and
warm affection of Americans.
Another column in Augusta speaks
the praises of the Georgians who
sigoed the declaration of independ
ence. Costly columns in many
cities and towns tell the tribute
which all hearts pay to.the valor
of the confederate dead* So also
portraits of Georgians who have
done eminent public service have
been suspended iu honorable poisi-
tions to keep their likeness in per
petual memory. Who could ques
tion the appropriateness of adding
to tlie ornament and honor of
Georgia by raising a lifelike statue

prudence of Ids unto. It will ad-

ligion, for lie was tlie cultured
friends of the Iirst and with wonder
fill utterance in his last days set
forth (lie great principles of tlie
last. He illustrated Georgia—de
fended her—silenced the foes who
maligned her name—gave her
power and place in tlie union—
earnestly yearned for her loyo and
delighted to die in her domain and
repose in dust. For these and
countless other causes wo would
honor his memory forever.
In conclusion, we would call
your attention to a few practical
and important details which will
also more fully appear iu other
communications. It is desired that
nt least $25,000 shall be raised dur
ing tho next three months from the
contributions of GeoVgia and to
this end practical arrangements
will lie made to reach the people.
Tho money will be placed on de
posit in tlie Onto City national
bank whoso president is tlie treas
urer of this luonumcuL fund, and lie
is under n bond of twenty-fivo
thousand dollars as treasurer. Ev-
ory contribution will be cash, will
lie publicly acknowledged in tbe
Constitution and other papers.
Every needed guaranty lias been
given to assure u faithful execution
of the trust to raison monument
to'the memory of Senator Ilill
worthy of his great fame. And
wo fervently hope that tlie nobio
work in which wo now so heartily
engage,may soon liavo its proper
consummation.

Bagging—Again.
MillcdgovUlo Recorder.
We feel tiiat wo cannot do our
farming friends a moro substantial
benefit just nt tho present time,
than by urging upon their atten
tion the importance oi buying tlie
heaviest and best bagging for bal
ing their cotton, it is a mnttor of
great importance, of many dollars
anil cents, to be saved or lost.
Can you not figure up yourselves
tlie difference between bagging
that weighs I j pounds to tho yard
and that which weighs 2j to tlie
yard 1 Say we received in Mil-
Icdgcviltc tiiis season 12,000 bales
of cotton: with six yards of bag
ging to the bale, that is 72,000
yards. At ljf pounds that is 126,
000 pounds: at 1\ pounds to tlie
yard there are 162,000 pounds, or
difference of 36,000 pounds of
bagging cqua! to cotton iu valuo,
which at 10 cents a pound makes
$3,600 (three thousand six hund
red dollars.) And what is more
tho heavy bagging costs only
little more; and then, if a man puts
on nine yards of bagging, as ho
should do, lie covers the bale close
ly, keeps bis cotton neat and clean,
and gets a bigger price, and more
weight to tlie hale. We hope we
do not intrude by our advice. It
is so plain und so reasonable, it
looks as though anybody could sec
the point without assistance.
