Sherman A. Ricker, the corn
king who died on Sunday, leaves
an estate worth $1,500,000. The
deceased was an erratio, but inter
esting character. He has bad bis
ups and downs in tbe market. Only
a Tew years ago he was so distress
ed for money that, it is said, friend
ly- packers had to lend him their
support, < to keep him from suc
cumbing; but of Into bo bas been
so rlob and. so lucky that bis move

of hundreds of speculators who
half a decade ago were a good deal
richer than the Corn King. A few
years ago be married a sewing wo

Iter death lie became despondent
and somewhat reckless in bis habits.
He became a ycry heavy drinker.
Liquor, It is said, however, never
suffused his brain.
A story which is well vouched
for relates how Kicker nml J. It.
Lyon, who once upon a time was
himself yclept •• King of the Corn
Pit,” crossed lances in this little

arena. Corn was selling at 45 cents
nml In those days Ricker mis a
hull and hyou a bear. The for
mer was drunk, when the latter
came up and ofTercd to sell him
500,000 bushel* of corn, “i’ll take
it,” quietly said Ricker. It was
considered “too had” l>y those in
the pit, and some wondered wheth
er or not John It. I,yon wroutd
rosily hold the drunken operator
. up to his contract. In the after
noon Rioker sent around Ids check
for the margins, and within forty-
eight hoars was carried to Wash-

Meanwhile corn advanced two and
three, cents per day. Lyon settled
tqr ithnt 600,000 with Rioker at 76
cents, so tbe gossips ssy. Ricker
Malaria is an almost in*
dcscribable malady which
not even the most talented
physicians are able to fath
om. Its cause is most fre
quently ascribed to local
surroundings, and there is
very little question, but this
opinion is substantiated by
facts. Malaria docs not nec
essarily mean chills and
fever while these troubles
usually accompany it It
often aficcts the sufferer with
general lassitude, accom
panied by loss of appetite,
sleeplessness, a tired feeling
and a high fever, the per
son afflicted growing weak
er and weaker, loses flesh
day after day, until he be
comes a mere skeleton, a
shadow of. his former self.
