THE STOIIM IN STEWART COUNTY.
Lumpkin, Un., September 10.—
It bus been raining incessantly
since Friday afternoon, mid last
night our quiet little town was vis
ited by u severe wind storm" from
the east which lasted trom 9 to 3
o’clock,
ElTC^CZaOPEDIA J | A few small houses, several chim
neys and over half the shade trees
in the town were blown down. Sev
eral trees blew across houses, but

house was blown down causing
$1,500 damage.
FIIOM MACON.
Mieon, Ga., Sept, 11 Reports
from all points in this'scction show
that great damage was done to the
cotton crop by tho wind and rain
storm of Saturday night. In south
western Gcorgiu, where the cotton
is open tlu* injury is nlso great, but
in the counties above, hopes uru
entertained that a few days sun
will repair the damage to some
extent.

In Georgia is the rarest type of
beauty in this country, and said
to Iiuvu descended from u settle
ment ol Irish in colonial times, who
brought thither the pearly tints,
blue eyes and black hair which are
still to be found. A confiding
Georgian who know how to ap
preciate lliesu mercies, and strives
to perpetuate them, says when the
sun beats too fiercely she bangs a
green veil over her sun-bonnet, mid
at all hazards - she can have re
course to bread and milk. Many
pcopi- believe in ti simple diet us
good for the complexion, but tho
efficacy of bread and milk lies in
its outward application in the form
duiuago by the storm of Monday.
The cotton crop was much damaged
in somo places, one-half the crop
being ruined. At Quincy, many
outhouses, fence, trees, etc., were
prostrated, and five persons, all
colored, wero killed, in ;Madison
much dnmago was done to proper-
tyi trees, etc. At Darbyville,
twenty-five miles west of Jackson
ville, the section house of the
Flbrida Central and Western rail
road was blown to pieces, the
section boss and his family miracu
lously escaping with a few braises.
Tlie adjoining house containing a
number of colored laborers was
"blown to atoms Sam White was
blown 300 yards through the air;
fearfully mangled and instantly
killed. Fivo others wore more or
less injured ny the wind and flying
timber. Sticks and boards wero
driven several feet into the ground
by tho forco of tho wind. 'Huge
trees were twisted and broken, and
the grass was torn up by the roots
nnd tho ground left as bare as if
prepared for cultivation. Many
cattle and hogs were killed. This
occurred at 10:50 p. m. Those
who saw the cloud described it as
pearshaped, rising and falling in
its progress and luminous with a
red and yellow light. At Talla
hassee, Gnllio’s hall, the new hotel
and other baildtngs'were Unroofed,
and the new Episcopal church was
badly damaged. Fences, tree nnd
outhouses were blown down, and
some of the magnlfiocnt oaks in
the capital yard, that had with
stood the blasts ot a century, wero
uprooted. Tho cyclone was tho
severest since 1812.
