_ When “lu Vluo,”
The Capital, of Washington,
which is one of the organs in which
the Slqr route thieves are said to
liavo invested money, has the fob
lowing:
The Critic last evening had a
sketch of the behavior of Benjamin,
sui named Brewster, in one of his
mellow moods, which loses none of
its fun because of its truth. Ben
jamin, bo it known, is the •‘only
eon” of Ids father—a half brother
to the contrary notwithstanding—
and, when not in one of his mellow
moods, may bedistingusished from
the common throng by a white
beaver hat, a large assortment of
Anger rings and a milled shirt, with
fluted culls of the period of Louis
Quatorze. Here is the sketch:
About five weeks ago a reporter
of The. Critic happened to be in
John Chamlerlain's restaurant, on
New York avenue, between Four
teenth and Fifteenth streets north
west. When the reporter walked
into the restaurant he espied cx-
Unitcd States Senator Stephen W.
Dorsey, J. F. Olmstead, real estate
dealer at 1410 Xcw York avenue;
H. M. Hutchinson and J. W. Bosler,
of Pennsylvania, seated at a table
partaking of a social glass of wine.
The reporter had not been in the
room long before a man high in
olllcial position came staggering in.
The was nothing in his appear
ance that denoted a man of more
than ordinary standing. There
was nothing in his deportment that
would lead one to regard him in
any other light than a common
tramp or drunkard.
llis deportment was, in fact,
that of a common toper. 11c was
reeling and staggering all over the
room and thrusting his tongue out
like a snake. His eyes were blear
ed and horribly red." In fact, this
man of high olllcial position was in
a maudlin state of intoxication.
He was not so drun 1 ', however, ns
to prevent his seeing Senator
Dorsey and his friends sitting in
the room.
As soon ns he discovered them
and noticed the fact that on their
table was a bottle and glasses lie
asked Mr. Chamberlain if lie had
any objection to introducing him
to his friends, referring to Mr.
Dorsey and party.
Mr. Clu-mbcrlain knowing this
alleged statesman and his rank, ol
course intormod him that he had
not.
‘“Then,” said the distinguished
olllcial, “introduce me.”
Mr. Chamberlain, taking bim by
the band, walked with him to the
table where the above named gen
tlemen were sitting.
“Senator Dorsey,” said Mr.
Chamberlain witli a smile childlike
and bland, “allow mo to introduce
to you Mr. Brewster. Attorney-
General of the United States.”
“Why, my God,” said his high
ness, “is this Stephen W. Dorsey
who is indicted for an alleged con
spiracy to defraud the Government
in the Star route cases ?”
‘‘1 am the man,”'said the ex-
Senator.
“Why, bless me, Dorsey, I'm
fie) m’ say that 1 owe my (hie)
posish'n—my pres’nl possish’n fie)
to you. Be (hie) kind enough fie)
to introduce me to your friends,”
said the Attorney-General with
visible emotion.
Mr. Dorsey complied ns follows:
“Mr. Bosler, this is Attorney
General Brewster; Mr. Hutchinson
Attorney-General Brewster: Mr,
Olmstead, Mr. Attorney-General
Brewster.”
“(Hie) Mr. 01—(hie) arc you in
dieted too ?”
“No, sir; I am not.”
“Are you (hie) Mr. Hutch—
what’s your name—indicted, too ?”
“Not yet,” said Mr. Hutchinson.
“Mr. Bosler you arc (hie) not
one of these Star routers ?”
“Oh, no; 1 am not; but I must
say I think they are very clever
gentlemen as fur ns I know, and I
would not be surprised if they were
sober.
lie, in his own office in the city of
Philadelphia not many weeks ago,
said to J. W. Bosler, a banker in
Carlish, Pa., that he had carefully
examined the cases, and that there
was no evidence to justify the ac
cusation, let alone the prosecution.
The above is the opinion of the
Attorney-General as to the guilt
of the Star route defendents when
drunk and when sober. The two
opinions agree.

t.,456,048 bales, a falling oil'from
he previous season of 1,149,702
bales. The receipts at the out-
ports were 4 088.107 bales, against
5,878.100 bales last year. Tie
ports were 0.051,075.against 4,505-
310. The total ipianity shipped
overland by rail direct to northern
mills amounted to 1,085,217 bales.
Of this 5l0,'.t02 went direct to eas
tern delivery ports, 480,170 to the
mills, and 80,145 from southern
oulports to eastern mills. Canada
took overland 31,547 bales, or 31
per cent more than last year. The
exports to foreign ports aggrega
ted 3,551,075, showing a falling off
of 1,014,241 bales. Northern spin
ners have taken out of this crop
77,581 bales against 1,713,026 last
year. A remarkable feature of the
statement is the large increase in
southern consumption, these mills
having taken from the outports and
plantations 380,953 bales against
225,311 bales last year. The stock
carried from the year’s crop
amounts to 125,582 against 217,031
