has appeared, liut thero are so many er
roneous ideus upon the subject that a few
words are in orderat a time when people
are subject to malarial influences.
Malaria, which means simply bod air,
is the common name ofacausoof dis
eases wliich arises from spores of decay
ing vegetable matter, thrown off from
stagnant pools or piles of vegetation un
dergoing decomposition. These spores
when inhaled with the breath or taken
into the system with water soon enter the
blood and germinating there And a foot
hold whereby the wholo system is pol*
8oned;aud the various functions disor
dered, When the germ theory of disease
was first advanced it was supposed that
these spores were of. animal nature, and
like the bacteria in diptheria were pro
pagated in the blood, but they ure row
conceived to be of vegetable origin, like
the fungi found on decaying wood or in
cellars. The source of this state of the
air iK generally swamps or stagnant pools
which, partially dried by the hot sun,
send forth vapors loaded with this ma
larial poison. These vapors doscend to
the earth in the night, cooled by the loss
of temperature and breathed by sleepers
are readily inbaled. Hence persous liv
ing near stagnant pools or marshes are
liable to be afflicted with ohills and levers
and snch localities are never healthy,
though they are more so when the stream
flowing into them are pure and also when
the water is high. Again the drainage
of houses, slaughter houses, burns etc.,
a fertile source of malaria. One will of
ten notice in coming into tbo neighbor
hood of one of these sluggish streams
that pass through almost every village a
most villianous smell caused by the of-
Tftrwi A v+a fensive refuso which communicates its
1 lilt ii.1 lb, JjILi bad odor to the atmosphere, especially
on hot days. This absorbed iuto the
system by the lungs or taken in through
water, which also absorbs it from the air,
poisons tho blood and deranges the
whole system. This poison is also de
veloped in force in wells and springs
when they becomo low, and tho result of
drinking these is tho same as breathing
the poisonous air. In a time of drouth
the great quantity of vegetation that dries
np in tho meadows, stubble fields and
pastnres, the corn fields and forest leaves
produces the effluvia. On the prairies
whou large tracts of prairie ground are
turned over the decaying vegetation is a
widespread cause of malurin.
The evils which follow malarial poi
soning are almost infiiuite. Disease of a
malignant and dangerous nature, accom
panied by symptoms tho most distressing
are certain to , manifest tberaselvos and
life is a burden so long as this poison re
mains in the system. The indications of
malnrial poisoning aro loss of appetite,
shortness of breath, pains abont the heart,

under tho ayes, an unusual color, odor
or sediment about tbo Jilnids passed from
the system, etc. Any ono of the above
symptoms may bo an indication of mala
rial poison in tbe body wbioh necessi
tates immediate and e refill attention.
But if malarial poison conid not find a
lodgement in tbe human body, it would
bo just as barmloss as tbo osygeu of tbo
air. The groat difficulty i. that, after be
ing absorbed into tbo.yatom. it produoes
obstructions in the .tomaob and lnags,
ologs tbe circulation of the blood, affects
tbo kidneys, liver and other organs, and
brings oa disease of a most dangerous
character. There is only ono known way
by which these disoases maybe avoided
or eared after they have once mado their
nd that
appearance, and that is bv keoplng tho
great purifying organ, of tbo body in per
feet health. Tbeso organs are tbo kid
neys and liver. No one whose ;kidnoys
or liver are in a perfect condition was
ovor afflicted by malarial poison. And
when tbeso organs are disordered, thoy
not only permit, bat Invite, these diseases
to make their inroads into the body.
It is now admitted by physicians, sci
entists and tbe majority of tbe general
public that one medicine, and only one
lion to “n -ver tell,” but in an un
guarded moment, a short lime ago,
out popped tbe secret. On llio oc
casion to which we refer I)an bad
become much interested in conver
sation with a gentleman about that
year, 1810, when Lady Throne was
to meet Goldsmith Maid at Buffalo.
She had beaten the Maid whenever
they bad contended on eastern
tracks, but the party oi the little
bay mare were quite confident of a
victory at Buffalo. Dan, after the
trial referred to, felt abundant con
fidence himself, and be related on
this recent occasion liow lie met
Mr. Smith, the owner of the Maid,
and told him ho would bent her.
“But,” said Mr. Smith, “wo can
trot three heats better than 2:20.”
“So ean I,”said Dan.
“We can trot three licatN better
than 2:18.”
“So can I,” said Dan.
“We can trot three heats in 2:16.”
“So can I,” said Dan.
The gentleman to whouj Mace
related tho foregoing conversation
casually asked, “Why, Dan, how
fast did you ever drive Throne.”
Dan impulsively replied: “I
drove her a mile just as fast as a
mile was ever trotted in public, and
tbe last half in 1:05.”
The secret of a decade was now
more fully out. Lady Tltrono trot

half in 1:05, timed by two of the
