One of our reporters, who has
just returned from Lee county,says
that the colored vote of Lee county
will be almost solid for Crisp, the
negroes being satisfied that the
Judge will prove as true a friend
to them in Congress as he has upon
the benoh.
STATE ELECTION.
There is more importance attach
ed to the election which takes place
in this State next Wednesday than
the people seem to renlize. It is
the opening of the Presidential
campaign, forced by the Republi
cans who have adopted a nctv pol
icy and arc now attempting ^to di
vide the Democracy of the South
by means of Independent candi
dates. A small majority for the
State tioket noxt Wednesday will
give the Republicans and Inde
pendents stronger hope and moro
determination for tho Congress
ional fight in November, and they
will make such an effort as may
result in the losss of scvoral Horn
ocratic Congressmen. A small ma
jority In tho^closo districts now
will Hood them with money in the
interest of tho independent candi
dates In November.
Wo know there are many Demo
crats to whom Mr. Stephens is ob
jcctionablc, but can they afford to
let their personal prejudices
aiSjgcr the party whose principles
they advocate? There arc sotno
who say that as they cannot vote
for Mr. Stephens they will stay
away Dorn the polls. Such a course
is virtually a vote for tho Uopub
licnn candidate, besides endanger
ing the success of the local candi
dates for the Legislature. While
wc hope that every man will make
up his mind to cast aside all per
sonal feeling and support the whole
tioket; if there are any who cannot
do so, let them at least vote for
such portions of the ticket as they
can. If Mr. Stephens’ majority
should be small, but the balance of
the ticket should receive thu usual
majority, it would show tliat Mr.
Stephens was personally unpopu
lar, but that the Democracy ofQeor-
gia were still firm in the support
of their principles.
As a United States Senator is
to be deoted by tho next Legisla
ture, it is important that that
branch of the State government
should be strongly Democratic.
While to many it may look as
though success in this direction
was certain, it must be borne in
mind that the Republicans are mak-
ing a quick and determined effort,
with the hope that the apathy in
the Democratic ranks may enable
them to steal a march upon us.
Tnosc who think that the success
of the Democratic ticket is assur
ed, and, therefore that there is no
need of their turning out to vote,
arc reminded that the grand ag
gregate of votes is made up of thou
sands of single votes, and, if but a
few Democratic voters in each
precinct remain at home that ag
gregate will be lessened by thou
sands.
for these reasons we ask every
' Democrat who desires the success
of his party and the triumph of its
principles to turn out next Wedncs-

congressman-at-large will occur at
the same time as the eleetton of
governor The error is occasioned
by the circumstance that the same
convention nominated Thomas
Hardeman and the Stale ticket,
and because the newspapers have
his name in the regular Democratic
ticket. The f late ticket is to be
voted for on the flit of October,
■and the congressional ticket on the
7th of November.

whether English spinners will be

been able to do so cannot be ex
