berry" has reached this office. Once more
we must say that all communications
favoring any candidate fora nomination,
or that anything touching upon personal
matters must be paid for at the rote of
ten cents per line.
—Thursday we were shown a sample
of Mr. G. W. C. Munroe’s cotton, the
same that he has claimed superior to
other cotton, in quality if not in yield.
In support of bis argument we are in
formed bis cotton sells for 12c when
other cotton brings but 10}. His storm
cotton brought over 10 cents.
PERSONAL PARAGRAPHS.
As Capt. and Mrs. W. H. Clay leave
soon for Florida, their friends determin
ed to give them a complimentary ball on
Wednesday night last. For some time
past a ball had been jin contemplation
for the benefit of the Infantry by some
of its members, as the company was in
no enviable situation financially, and the
thought struck them to combine the two i
affairs into one, and os soon as the pro
jector of the Wednesday night ball could
be seen it was done to the satisfaction of
all parties. It was at first determined to
give a domino ball, and. the hund-bills
and invitations were issued announcing
it as such, but the managers, nfter con
sulting with several ladies of the city,
were advised to change it to a Dress Ball,
and they have so agreeu to do, Proper
committees have been appointed, who
will take charge of the ball as soon as the
musio begins. With such cool night
and with such splendid musics large
number are oxpccted to be present.
The Columbus Italian Band arrived
on Monday evening, were engaged for the
occasion, and the managers feel confi
dent in saying that the music will be
superior to any that has been in Ameri
cus for many months. Every arrange
ment was completed yesterday and an
enjoyable time is anticipated for the eve
ning.
Tickets are on sale at Miss Agnes Ay-
cock's at one dollar each.

the Americas Recorder It ii as credita
ble in point of patronage, taking the
places into consideration, os the one is
sued by the Augusta Chronicle, and that
is saying a good deal. Its mechanical ex
ecution is equal to the best. The whole
issue is a credit to the city and to the in
dustrious proprietor of the Recorder.
It giveB the outside w< rid a view of Amer

sources. Wo hope Editor Glessner may
reap a rich harvest from bis publication.

Mr. Wm. A. Bailey, ofCuthbert, and Miss
Annie Ansley, of tbis city,,were united in
marriage at the residence of the bride's
parents, by Rev. J. O. A. Cook. They
attended by Mr. Chag. Ansley, of
this city, and Miss Gertrude Gunn, of
Cuthbert; Mr. John Gunn, of Cnthbert,
and Miss Leila Davenport, of this city;
Mr. Jo. P. Davenport and Miss May Speer,
ofthmeity. The wedding was a very
qniet one, only a few intimate friends of
the contracting parties being in attend
ance. Mr. Bailey is one of Cuthbert's
foremost young men, and has a splendid
prospect before him, in this, the begin
ning of a new life. As for Miss Ansley,
we can say nothing of her that would not
be but a repetition of the sentiments of
her friends. Gifted with beauty, grace
and numerous accomplishments, the
young man may well feel proud of having
won her. In full accord with their many
well-wishers, we wish them true happi
ness, such ns can tall to the lot of those
who have ever lived in and breathed the
air of the glorious Sunny South.

Wedding Bells.
On Wednesday last at the residence of
the bride’s mother, the marriage of Mr. T.
E. Barrow and Miss Alice Hand was cele
brated, Dr. Goo. F. Cooper uniting them
in the holy bonds. The lovely and ac
complished Mrs. Barrow is well known
and beloved in our community and was
graduAtoofF. M. F. College of our city.
Mr. Barrow has borne from Sumter one
of her brightest jewels to add to Mitchell’i
treasures. The wedding ceremony was
private; only near relatives and a few in
timate friends were in attendance. An
elegant breakfast was served, after which
the party took carriages in order to reach
the station for the south bound train.
Among the guests we noted Col. D. C.
Barrow, of Oglethorpe, Hon. Pope Burrow
and Prof. D. C. Barrow, Jr., of Athens, Col.
and Mrs. J. L. Hand, of Pelham, Miss
Dickerson, of Decatur. To the happily
wedded pair we extend our congratula
tions and best wishes.

If there is anything onr young people
appreciate and love, it is good.music, and
none hud cause to complain of that fur
nished Wednesday night by the Colum
bus Italian Band on the occasion of a ser
enade to several of the young ladies of
Americus by a party of half a dozen
young gentlemen. Tho repertoire of tho
band embraces many selections from
popular operas, besides many classical
waltzes, murches, etc., (and the melody
doubly enhanced by the artistic man
ner in which they are rendered. Wo
hardly think the band bos on equal in
Southern Georgia. They furnish the
music for the Dress Ball to-night.
A Few Plain Words*
As almost every man in town knows,
the Amezious Light Infantry is not in as
fine condition as it should be. Whether it
is the fault of the members or whetbor it
is the fault of others is immaterial at
present. All know that tho lives and
homes of onr people may at some time
bo plnced in peril, and in such peril that
nothing but armed discipline could pro
tect it. Hence it is the duty of all to see
that our little armed body is kept up.
The.mattcr rests iu the bands of the mem
bers. who were eleoted as members with
their consent, a short time ago. Should
they bo lukewarm there is no doubt but
that the company will go to pieces. The
officers, with the exception of a few
who have remained to keop up the or
ganization, have resigned, expecting the
new members topnt in an appearance.
At the time of this writing but a fow have
over appeared in the armory. All that
is asked is about two evenings n month
for a couple of hours, and who cannot af
ford to give that when the object is con
sidered.? But wo did not wish to write
on that particularly. What we wish to
speak of is the benefit to bo given them
to-night. With the treasury in a flour
ishing condition and no debts to pay,
probably the members could then find suf
ficicnt interest in the meetings to attend.
This is merely a probability; whether it
is so or not we are unprepared to state,
but ye are inclined to that opinion. The
secret of all successful organizations is
the strict attention to the fiuances. Let
every member attend the domino to-night
and induce bis friends to go.
Now is the timo for Sowing
Rye and Barley!
Jailed.

brought lo town a negro nanmd George
Nicy and turned him over to tho Sheriff

own little sister on tho evening before.

Kiwi Gathered on th« Street*.
While passing along tlio street, it few
days ago, wo were accosted by Mr. Cal
vin Carter, the shoe mercbanl. who ask
ed us if wo had heard of the new candi
date. We replied that we Imd not. Ho
said there was certainly another going to
run, and that his supported wero well
organized and were going to do some
hard work to elect him, aud that he had
no doubt but that he would inakc a good
race, and that ho was going to do all ho
could for him. We saw that he had be
come considerably enthused and thut be
meant every word he said. We told him
wo were surprised at his toking such in
terest in politic,, especially an Independ
ent, when lie had always been a trua
democrat, and thought ha ought to sup
port tho regular nominee, aud that we
must know who the new candidate was.
After some hesitation he said it was him
self—that he did not mean lie who an In
dependent in politics, but that he was an
Independent candidate for all the trade
he could get by fair dealing. He hits a
heavy stocK of shoes of all classes, from
the cheapest stogy to the finest custom
made. His motto is moderate profit, and
to give his customers value received for
their money. The best shoe, you can
buy nro undoubtedly the cheapest Mr,
Carter says he don't claim that the man
ufacturers of Ids goods can make any
belter goods than other first-class manu
facturers, but he docs clnim to handle
goods that are unexcelled in quality,
style and fit, and his prices for such goods
arc exceedingly close.
The truth of the business is, tho proof
ot (lie pudding is tbu chewing the hag,
so give Mr Curler your shoe trade and
you will ho convinced- He buys from
1 he manufacturers and gets the closest
