«BI6HT DEMOCRATIC PROSPECTS.
Washington. Sept. 25.—At tbe
headquarters of tbe democratic con
gressional campaign committee the
workers are enthusiastic over re
cently received reports Irom Ohio,
where tbe leaders claim that the
democrats will not carry the state,
but elect at least seven, and possi
bly ten, members of Congress.
Since the nomination of Cleveland
in New York, tbe committee is ad
vised that a gain in tbe congress
ional delegation will lie made in
that State. Similiar advices are
received from Pennsylvania. Tilt

The New York Evening Post
dubs Foigcr the administration
candidate, and says “if anything
should bo odious to the popular
mind it is an intrusive interference
of tbe Federal power witli Slate
affairs.” Evidently a great change
has come over tbe dream of some
to onr Northern Republican friends.
The New York Sun is perspicu
ously right in its remark: “Wo
hold that the first duty of overy
intelligent patriot is to turn the
Republican , party out of power.
No matter whether wc are entirely
satisfied or not witli any nomina
tion which inay contribute to this
great end, it is our duty to sup
port It."
Six of the Eastman tiegroc
rioters arc now in the Macon jail
for safo keeping until the day of
their execution arrives. They arc
to be hung in Eastman on the 20tb
of October, and tbe authorities have
wisely ordered that the execution
shall bo private. The fact that the
cxeention Is to be private should
be made known to all the negroes
in that 800tlon, that they may not
bo attracted to Eastman, for should
they be so attracted there would be
danger of another riot ami more
bloodshod.
Tbe well-informed correspondent
of the Evening Post, writing from
Albany, says: “Everybody, with
tbe exception of those who were in
tbe business of cheating at Sa
ratoga, believes that Cleveland
will be elected. Republicans, right
and lelt declares their intention to
vote for him. He is conceded n
majority ranging anywhere from
50,000 to 100,000." The tidal
wave is evidently beginning to set
in.
It will take a great deal bigger
barrel to make New York republi
can this year than it did in 1882-
For motives of policy John Kelly
will be rigidly virtuous this time,
so as to raise the price of the po
litical commodities he deals In

paign comes on. Wc have no
belief In his sincere reformation,
and If ho really works for demo
cratic success this time, it wil!

The September elections being
over, the only others that precede
the general November elections for
^congress and state officers are three
that occur in October. In Georgia,
state officers and a legislature are
to be chosen October 4, in Ohio a
portion of the Btato officers
and congressmen October 10, and
in West Virginia, on the same day,
congressmen, a legislature, and a
judge of the court of appeals. The
complexion of the next congress
can only he known, however, in the
elections of November 7.
made, new buggy whips were pro-
cnrretl, and the parties toed the
mark, about five feet apart, and op
erations commenced. The Jackson
Herald gives the following account
of this Georgia duel:
“The battle ground was in front
of Freeman's livery stable, in the
heart of the town, and it was not
long before most of the citizens of
the town were looking on at a safe
distance. No one Imd interfered,
and the combatent* were making
steady and regular licks upon each
others bucks without flinching, and
the strokes of the whips could be
beard several blocks away, as they
went whizzing through! the air and
fell upon the hacks of the two
men. Occasionally the one or the
other would back a little from his
line, but lie would soon come up
again to the scratch. Whenever
they got tired one would call out
to the other to hold up a while, and
they would hold op a while, and
they would take a blowing spell,
and when they got rested they
would go at it again. The fight
continued forover three hours, with
short intervals for rest. Afftr the
second round, Hill, who hud no
covering upon his hack except a
shirt, insisted that Gross should
pull off Ins coat, which he did, and
then they took both hands to their
whips aud went to work. Iiv this
time the news of the fight had
spread alt over the town; some of
the merchants even closed up their
stores, and business was generally
suspended, to sec wlmt would be
the result of the encounter. Alter
they lind worn out seven dollars'
worth of buggy whips, and were
completely tired down, they agreed
to quit, and Hill told Gross he was
satisfied. From parties who saw
Hill’s buck we learn there was not
a place on it that you could place
a silver quarter without touching
one ot the whelps that were made
by ihe whips, and he was marked'
all over in the same way. We learn
that Gross was not hurt quite so
bail, and was nlilc to be out the
next day, hut llill had to lay up.
It was rumored over this way that
he wus seriously sick.

1118 PLANS—SUCCESS SURE.
News Gathered ou the Htreete.
While p issing along the street, it few
days ago, we were accosted by Mr. Cal
vin Carter, the shoe merchant, who ask
ed no if we Imd heard of the new candi
date. We replied that wc had not. He
said there whs certainly another going to
run, and that his supporteis were well
organized and were going to do some
hard work to elect him, nud that lie had
no doubt but that be would make a good
race, and that he was going to do all ho
could for him. We saw that lie had be
come considerably enthused and that he
meant every word he said. We told him
we were surprised at his taking such in
terest in politics, especially an Independ
ent, when he lud always been a true
democrat, and thought he ought to sup
port the regular nominee, ami that we
must know who tbe new candidate wus.
After some hesitation he said it was him*
self—Hint he did not mean he was an In
dependent in politics, but tlmt he was an
Independent candidat? for all the trado
lie could get by fair dealing. He has a
heavy stock of shoes of all cluascs, from
the cheapest stngv to the lineal custom
made. His motto is moderate profits and j
to give bis customers value received for
their money. The best shoes you can
buy lire undoubtedly the cheap; st Mr,
Carter says lie don’t claim that ihe man
ufacturers of his goods can make any
better goods than other first-class manu
facturers, but be docs claim to handle
goods Hint aie unexcelled in. quality,
style and lit, and Ids pt ices for such goods
are exceedingly cl or.
The truth of ihe business is, the proof
of the pudding is the chewing the hag,
so give Mr Carter your shoe trade and
you will be convinced* He buys from
the manufacturers and gets the closest
possible prices and can afford to scli at
reasonable pi ices.
