OFFICIAL COUNCIL PROCEEDINGS.
MATE ELECTION.
The election for State olliccrs in
Georgia, Wednesday, passed off
very quietly, and an extraordinarily
small vote was polled. The reports
from almost every county arc to the
effect that the negroes generally
stayed at home, while but little
interested was manifested by the
by the whites. While k thc vote
was light, the majority for the
Democratic State ticket is lurg<;
the Atlanta Constitution placing it
at 50,000. The result of this elec
tion is calculated to discourage the
Republicans and Independents, ns
it shows that their principles find
but few indorsers in Gcorgiu. Wo
ure glad to see the majority on the
State ticket so large, for it will
have a wholesome effect upon the
election for congressman in No
vember.
One of the first acts of General
Sherman, as acting secretary of
war, was to sign the acceptance of
tho resignation of Gen. Stoneman
as a colonel on the retired list of
the army. General Stoneman is
the Democratln candidate for gov
ernor of California, lie is a man
of wealth. Ho is largely engaged
in agricultural enterprises, and has
an incomo of $8,000 or $10,000 a
year. Ho can, therefore, afford to
relinquish the $3,000 which he re
ccivcs as a retired colonel. Hut
such an act is almost unpreccdent
ed. General Stonoman graduated
from the Military Academy in
184C, and has been an officer in the
army continuously until tho pres
ent time. At tho outbreak of tho
war he was major of tho First cav
airy. He became a brigadeor gen
oral of volunteers in August, 1871,
and major general in the following
year. He served with distinction
as a general officer during tho re
belllon, and nt the close of the war
ho became colonel of tho Thirty
first infantry. He retired on uc
count of disabilities in 1871.
TO TIIE VOTERS OE THE THIRD
CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT.
I announce myself an Indupeud
ent candidate for Congress from
this District at the en.uing election
in November next. Hound by no
party, caucus, rings, digues or
combinations, I recognize only my
responsibility to the people, and ir
elected, 1 promise to devote what
ever ability thnt I possess to their
interest.
David U. Hauukm.
Wo extend oui congratulations
to Bro. McIntosh, of the Albany
News and Advertiser, upon his
election us Representative from
Dougherty county, and also to the
citizens of that county, for lie will
prove u faithful and efficient legis
lator.
It seems that the editors of the
Wnycross Reporter and tho Coffee
County Gazette are having a great
deal of quiet fun at each others ex
pense.
We arc under obligations to ed
itor Waterman of the Mource Ad
vertiser, for the following items: I
Mr. Stephens predicted the loca-1

You arc even, gentlemen.
The Augusta News speaks of

Evan Howell? He has no dupli

Gen. Gartrell has been a candi
date for a good many offices, but
Mr. Stephens is a long way ahead
of him in tlmt respect—and also
in the matter of getting wlmt he Is

A Macon young man recently *
sent ten dollars to be used as u '
margin in answer to one ol the hull-.
dreds of advertisements of bogus
Wall street brokers. The ten dol- i

the young man begins to realize
fully the fact that for putting mon
ey up for margins there is some
chance of the money never being
heard from.

have been under tho surveilancc of
