pretty a town as this.
Out of tho city readers of the Sunday
Bkcohdkk will now get their papers on
Sunday, us we have just found out that
tliey could be mailed on that day.
- We got up to look at the comet on
Saturday morning, and it turned out to
be the saddest looking thing our optics
ever viewed. We pronounce it a base
and glaring fraud.
—We hope the holies will go to work
and see how many nice things they cun
* et up for exhibition at the coming Fair,
for the products of their taste and skill
.•re al ways attractive.
—Prophet J. A. Walters to the contra
ry, the comet did not ••bust" Saturday,
and the world moves on ns usual. Some
artesian water should be injected
head, it might make it healthy.
—The Americus Fair Association is de
termined that the people shall know that
the Annual Fair will take place on the
24th, and this week will post up some
large aud handsome bills announcing that
fact.
—The 14 irlow House is doing a rush
ing business, and well it might. We
were told the other day that last Monday
morning Mr. Scott received the Kimball
House bill offareand immediately dupli
cated it.
—When our merchants want anything
in the way cf job work, they need not
send to Macon or Atlanta, for by buying

time, pretty material, which is very
becoming. The style is a very popular
one, and one that ought to be universal
ly'adopted, as by it we get a pretty ami
insbionable attire at a mere nominal cost.
There is also another style of dress worn
by our young ladies consisting of a bod
ice of light blue or pink, and an over
skirt of white tulle. It is very pretty in
deed, and is suitable for either a walking
or evening dress.
I noticed on the street one evening this
week, one of our prettiest girls thus at
tired—waist of a very light blue, white
tule overskirt, with wide pink ribbons;
the daintiest little slippers and pink hose;
huir flowing loosely over her well.round
ed shoulders. She made a picture that a
Raphael would paint with pride. She
was out for un evening stroll with a girl
companion—none the less pretty—and
tliey promenaded down Church street,
our fashionable and popular "Boule-
•ard,” she was the admired of oil admir
ers" and the envy of her less favored sis
ters.
The hop given by our young men at the
Barlow House last week was pronounced
a most delightful affair by all who attend
ed. The music by the Italian Band was
simply divine, and as the couples tlonted
through, and kept time to the music of
the dreamy etherial| waltz, we know*it
could only be compared to “Paradise it
self.” We hope the young gentlomeu
will favor us with another bop at an ear
ly day. as nothing in the world is more
enjoynbloton girl—and we shonld think
to young men also—than a social affair
like the last.
1 learn thut the formation of a Germnu
Club is contemplated by them also. Do
by all means. Let’s have it, as such an
institution would bo “most healthful”
and delightful to nil, and as the gaities
of the winter season draw neurit would
be so ple.isant to intersperse them with an
affair of this particular Kind,
The matrimonial fever is becoming
alarmingly prevalent in “these parts” and
some of our fairest flowers have lately
been plucked from our midst, and more
are to follow at an early day. The stran
gest feature ot' all is, that only young men
from other cities seems to bo acceptable
to them. Does this not seem queer in
deed? Where does tho fault lie? Sure
ly not on the part of tho young gentle
men, for it would indeed be a sad com
mentary upon them if such was the case.
Look to your laurels, hoys, and see that
further “infringements” of a similar
kind are made upon your “sacred rights"
long itwill lie tyo late and yon
will have only yourselves to blame—if the
fault is yours.
I regret to see the lagging iuterost in
both the “Clubs" ox late. The last meet
ing of each one was rather poorly at
tended, and the interest manifested in
them small, indeed. Let the members
spur up.iud by all means give to each
organization the entertaining power they
formerly possessed, for both are power
ful auxiliaries to good in our midst.

A Notable Arrest.
Marshall Lingo nnd Officer Wheeler

munity. They Imd just received a cireu
lur in the morning containing a portrait
of a railroad embezzler, who had oscuped
with a largo amount of money in the
east, and which offered a large reward
for his arrest. Tho officers put their
heads together, nnd then approached
■‘ye local,” tenderly leading him away, one
)n each side, at the same time producing
the fatal likeness. They swore that he
was a far ttimilt of thedef .niter, nnd pro
duced the picture, nnd oh. Heavens, it
was of the ugliest man in the State-Mar
shal Lingo.

Hextuple Spring.
In another column will bo found nn
avertisement sotting forth the claims of
the Sextuple Bed Spring patented by our
townsman. 8. Fleischmnn, who is now
manufacturing them in this city. Having
carefully examined these springs and
their mode of manufacture, we think the
advertisement is very modest in its
cl ims, nnd it is all that it is represented
to be with a large margin left. No one
who examines them can fail to see their
superiority over ull others, and as they
are sold at the samo prico ns other springs,
their purchase is a matter of economy, as
you get the best nt the same price as
those not so good. These springs have
been fully tested, and in every instance
bave fully born out the claiine of the
patentee. Live men can make mouey l»y

Good barbers are among the necessi
ties of modern civilization. To bo neat,
tidy nnd comfortable, one must occasion
ally submit bimsclf to the deft manipu
lations of a first-class tonsorial artist.
Americus can boast ot u couple of us
good barbers as can be fouud in the
State, and they are both to be fouud at
one shop. If you dou’tgive fullcredcnco
to this assertion, just call ou Anderson &
Lunfordat their place of business and
place yourself in the bands of either

News Gathered ou the Streets.
While passing along tho street, a few
days ago, we were accosted by Mr. Col
vin Carter, the shoe merchant, who ask
ed us if we had heard of the new candi
date. Wo replied that we bad not. He
said there was certainly another going to
run, and that his supporters were well
organized and were going to do some
hard work to elect him, aud that he had
no doubt hut thnt he would make a good
race, and that he was going to do all he
could for him. Wv saw that he had lie-
come considerably enthused and that he
meant every word he said. We told him
we were surprised at his taking such in
terest in polities, especially an Independ
ent. when lie had always been a true ,
democrat, and thought he ought to sup- ,
port the regular nominee, aud that we
must know who ttie new candidate was.
After some hesitation he said it was him
self—that lie did not mean he was an In
dependent in politics, but that he was an
IiHlepeudent candidate for all the trade
he could get by fair dealing. Helms a
heavy stocK of shoes of ull classes, from
the cheapest stogy to the finest custom
made. His motto is moderate profits and
to give his customers value received for
their money. The best shoes you can
buy are undoubtedly the cheapest Mr,
(’arier says lie don’t claim that the man
ufacturers of his goods can make any
better goods than other first-class manu
facturers, but lie does claim to handle
goods that are unexcelled in quality,
style and fit, and his price*for such goods
are exceedingly close.
The truth of the business is, the prool
of the pudding is the chewing the bag,
so give Mr Carter your shoe trade aud
you will be convinced* Ue buys from
the manufacturers aud gets the closest
possible prices and can afford to sell ut
reasonable pi ices.

ECONOMY.
It is the economical man who succeeds
in life and is happy. His wife always wears
good clothes, nnd his children always
have plenty of syrup on their breAd. He
is not worried to death by duns, and he
don’t have to sneak up n back alley in
order to avoid tbo man he ovjos. By an
economical man I don’t mean a stingy
man, for there’s a big difference between
eoonomy and stinginess. Your stingy
nmn don’t enjoy anything, not even his
breath, for he’s afraid to draw a full
breath for fear he won’t have enough to
last the day oat.
Economy mentis to bny the best at the
lowest prices, and thnt is tho reason why
all economical people buy their furniture *
of D. B. Hill, for they know that his fur-
niturois well and neatly made, durable
and handsome, nnd sold at prices os low
as good furniture can be sold for. They
know thnt he keeps a large stock
and thnt they can make a good selec
tion, get what they want, nnd thcro is
more in that than you may think, for
when you bny something you do not
want you are never satisfied with it.
There is another thing your economi
cal man does—ho always buys ds many
things as possible ut one store, knowing
thnt when ho runs up u good bill he can
always gut a good reduction, and that is
another reason why he boys at Hill’s
Furniture Store, for tbero ho can not only
find all kinds of furniture, but ho can
bny dishes, crockery, lamps, silver and
plated ware, curtains, cutlery, and in fact
almost anything to set up housekeeping.
Your economical man knows all'tkis and
don’t fool away bis timo nnd money by
running all over town after things that
be can purchaso nt one place, and he
knows that Hill is always liberal to good
customers.
Finally nnd in conclusion, my hearers,
I can say that true eoonomy consists in
buying your furniture nnd housekeeping
goods at D. B. Hill’s Furniture Store,
which you will find on Cotton Avenue,
in Americus.
