Now for Pennsylvania and New
York and a Democratic president
in 1HK2.
It begins lo look as though the
South was not lobe left alone in its
Democratic solidity.
lien. Buttcrworth,tlic foul-mouth
ed slanderer of the South, bus been
elected to stay at home by his Ohio
constituents.
On Thursday of last week the
otllce of the Fort Unities Tribune
was scorched a little by lire, but
not much damage was done.
boon fob oino.
We feel proud of Ohio, our na
tive state, for it this week elected
the entire Democratic state ticket
by a majority of 2ft,000, and sends
liftecn Democratic congiessinon out
of n delegation of twenty-one. In
1880 the Republicans elected liftecn
out of twenty congressmen, making
a Democratic gain of ton congress
men, thus insuring a Democratic
House in the next Congress. Hav
ing fought with the Democracy of
Hint state in many a hard battle
against overwhelming odds, we
know how good they feel in this
their hourof victory,and we rejoice
with them in thus having added to
the Democratic galaxy one of the
brightest stars in the constellation
of States.
CONCEALED WEAPONS.
While attending court in this
circuit we have been stiuck with
the emphasis of the instructions of
tile Judge to the Uranil Juries in
regard to the law prohibiting the
carrying ofconcealed weapons, and
also with the prompt and severe
punishment of those found guilty
of violating this law. We say we
were struck by lliesu facts because
the general impression in the North
is that the Southern people are
walking arsenals, their pockets tilled
with pistols and knives, which are
at the least provocation. Yet so
far is this trom being true, we be
lieve that treble the number of con
cealed weapons are carried in the
North, in pioportion to the popu-
idaliou, than in the South. We
know that in the North that it is
no Uncommon thing for hoys in
their teens lo carry revolvers con
stantly about their persons, and the '
practice is so common that the ■
danger of it has often been spoken
of Ijy the press of that section; yet 1
there have (men no active measures
taken to preveut it. It is true that
in many Northern states there are
laws prohibiting the carrying of,
concealed Weapons, hut the laws,
are not enforced. While the peo-!
pic of the South have a reputation j
in the North of beino lawless and
murderous in their propensities and
practices, our cx|ierienee is that
there are no people who are more
law-abiding, and whose courts are
inoic piompt in the punishment of j
crime.
Waste of wealth is sometimes
retrieved; waste of health seldom;
hut waste ot time, never.
HIE OLD VETERAN SPEAK*.
On Tuesday last Ocn. Phil. Cook,
the old veteran in war anil politics,
addressed the people of Dooly
county assembled at court in \ ien-
na. His speech was a manly one,
i pointed, well limed, and we believe
Will lie productive of much good..
He urged upon the Democracy the
i importance of turning out to the
congressional election in Novem
ber; for, while lie had not a
fear of the defeat of J i d ;e
Crisp, it was important that his
majority should lie as large as pos
sible, in view of the fact that in
the last Congress several Demo
cratic members were expelled from
their scats by tile Republican ma
jority solely upon the ground that
they had not received a majority
of all the votes in their districts—
tlic Republicans arguing llicrelrom
that tlic negroes were kept away
from Hie polls by I brents of vio
lenee. He wanted Judge Crisp's
majority to lie so large that bis ti
tle to the scat could not be (pics-
Honed even by tin unscrupulous
Republican majority, lie compli
mented Judge Crisp highly as a
gentleman of ability and integrity
anil a true Democrat, lie then
contrasted Democratic and lie-
publican rule, showing tliula Deni-
nurulic Congress bad nsiueed the
annual expeiulilmcs ul'Hli* (iov-
(TIililciil bu tt millions of dollars,
while Ibc late Republican Congress
bad increased Ibc expenditures
seventy eight millions of dollars
Referring tollic Republican charge
of a "..olid Smith," lie said the
South laid good reasons for being
solidly Democratic, as it was in the
interest of civilization and good
government that it should be so.
He gave the colored men present
some good, plain advice, showing
them Hint it was lo their interest
lo help those who were their neigh
hors, whose taxes educated their
children, and whose interests were
identical with theirs, rather than
alllliatc with those who cared noth
ing for them bill their aid in get
ting olllce. The speech was well
received by the audience, and did
honor to tlic head and heart of tlic
gallant old veteran who lias for so
many years led the Democracy of
the Third District on to victory.
HERE WE REST

Tlic Monroe Advertiser views
the situation very calmly, thus:
The enterprising Yankees buy our
cotton seed, haul it oil, make it in
to oil and sell it Imek to us. Clev
er folks, those yankeos. They bid
fair to get most of our money; hut
it is our own fault.
Tlic Albany Newsaud Advertis
er learns on wlmt it (cel juslilieil
ill regarding as perfectly reliable
authority that, the llrunswiek and
Alhnnv road was recently sold to
the Krlnngcr Syndicate, and that
steps will be'taken at an early day
to push Hie road through to Kiil'au-
la, Ala.
The Monroe Advertiser thus dis
tinguishes the difference between
raising cotton and eggs: Tile only
eggs in town Friday were held at
2ft cents a dozen. There was abun
dance of cotton at ten cents a
pound. It is easier, you see, to
raise two and a half pounds of cot
ton Ilian one dozen eggs.

As Regards Cabbages.
Last Friday several of our mer-
| chants received by express can-
1 tinges from Cincinnati. Those
| Ohioans know how to raise cab-
| tinges, send them a thousand miles
by express, and make a prolit on
; them. They probildy think Goor-
{ gin is a desert, else the people
! would raise their own cabbages.
I Rut Georgia is not a desert; it is a
fertile, productive state, and lion-1
1 roe county is one ol the most tor-
j tile and productive parts of it. Yet
our people liny cabbages which
have been shipped a thousand mil s
by express. . Will the time ever
! come when our people will think
; that anything else is worm raising
; besides cotton? They suy l here
| is no money in anything else. They
j would laugh at a roan who would
1 try to make money by raising cab-
1 liagcs; hut large fortunes are made
j in the north by men who raise just
such trilling things ns cabbages.
Onr people are two high sighted.
They can't see anything smaller t
than a cotton bale. Cotton, they
say, is the only crop in Georgia
that there is any money in. If you !
don't believe us. you cull just look j
around you and see bow our far- :
