He Is tlie candidate as usual, and

He was one of the oldest residents
of Albany and was a prominent

Tlie effect of the Ohio election
upon tho Democrats of Pennsylva
nia has been to make them enthu
siastic and confident of victory,
while tlie Hepub’.icaiis are corres
pondingly depressed.
We agree with the Macon Graph

complish great good and advance
the material interest of t.ie people
if it should see ill to abolish the
Kailroad Commission.”
Gen. Henry W. Slocum lias no
doubt of a Democratic victory in
New York this fall. In accepting
the nomination lor Congressman
at large ho returns thanks for his
“assignment to this honorable po
sition in the triumphant column
now marching to assured victory."
Tlie General seems to Imvc mi his

There is not the least doubt of a
large Democratic majority in tlie
next Federal House of Represent::-
lives, il the Democrats do not lose
considerably in tlie Southern States.
Their gains in tlie three great Slates
of New York, Pennsylvania and
Ohio .will lie more than Buillcient
(<> overcome the Republican ma
jority in tlie present House.

The prospects for a Democratic
success In 1884 are extremely flat
tering. The pirty has Just carried
Ohio with a rousing majority, and
will, in all probability, bring New
York and Pennsylvania wiiltiD
tblr party lines in November. This
has occurred, however, two years
liefore tho Presidential election—

The cotton crop is being gather
ed lust in Stewart county, and in
many places it will require but one
more picking to niukc n clean
sweep of it. A short crop and a
short price will seriously injure the
farmers of the county.
The condemned Kastman rioters
made a third attempt to escape on
Sunday morning. They are giving
no attention whatever to prepar
ing themselves for the doom that
awaits Ilium, llicir whole time be
ing occupied in devising means by
which they can escape.
The Advertiser, in bragging on
a Monroe county apple tree, lias
this to say: "Mr. John T. McGin-

which he transplanted from t!.e
country Inst winter. About June
2Sth, the only apple which was left
on the tree—the others having
been blown ofl by a storm—was
oaten, being fully ripe. Ill July
the tree bloomed again, and now
tlie only apple left on it is nearly
ripe, and tbe tree is blooming again
Three crops in one year arc rath

shows what a Monroe county apple
tree can do when it tries.’’

Rev. Henry Jessup, the mission
ary, '•hen in this country a few
years ago, suggested that many of
the poems and rhymes in ‘‘St.
Nicholas” could be translated into
the Arabic language, and still re
tain much of their melody and
rhythm. The publishers at once
offered to supply any illustrations
that would be needed lor a book of
such translations, and the result is
a volume ill Arabic with text and
illustrations from "St. Nicholas.”
It was printed in Beirut, Syria,
and is probably the lirst ^‘illustrat
ed juvenile" ever printed in that
country, or in that language. Tlie
lirst copy was bound in Beirut, on
the Mill of last June, and a re
duced flic-simile of its pages is an
nounced to appear in the Nnvcm
her “St. Nicholas.” We arc in
debted to tile publishers for one of
the niigilinl sheets of tlie hook
printed in Kyria.
TO THE VOTERS OF THE THIRD
('OXHRKSNlOX.il. DISTRICT.
I announce myself an Independ
ent candidate for Congress from
this District at tlie ensiling election
in November next. Bound by nr
party, caucus, rings, cligues or
combinations, I recognize only uiy
responsibility to tlie people, and if
elected. 1 promise to devote what
ever ability that i iiossess to lheir
interest.
David B. Harrell.
Senator Vortices prediet that In
diana will give 10,000 Democratic
majority in November. He says
that tlie campaign is a lively one;
that but little money is being
used and llrat most of the
floating vote will go to tlie demo
crats. On the other hand, Senator
Harrison says that tlie prospects
of tlie republicans are good and
improving every 'lav, and that Mr.
Yorbees has done more than any
other uiau to aid them. His indis
creet utterances on the slump, and
the fact that lie voted for nearly
every measure of which tlie demo
crats complain, have made him a
good aource for the republicans to
draw texts fro in.
