In the evening a sprightly farce of “A

and was followed by Dumas’ thrilling
drama, “The Princess of Bagdad,” in
which Miss Scott as the “Countess De-
Hun” and Mr. 8. K. Coburn as “Jean
Count DeHnn” very cleverly and effec
tively aotf d, and secured three recalls be
fore the curtain. The cast generally was
excellent, nnd the performance was re
markably good. The company leave this
morning for Augusta, and we can com
mend them to the appreciative playgoers
of thut city as well worthy of putronuge.

A Suggestion.
We would suggest to our metclmnts
that they make preparations for a hand
some exhibit of goods at the coming Fair.
There is not a firm in Amerieus which
could uot, witb a little effort, make a
handsome show, and wo feel assured tlmt
they would be fully repaid for their trouble
by the attention they would attract. Let
our merchants show our farmer friends
that they appreciate these lairs and will
endeavor to make them a success. The
fnrming nnd mercantile interests of this
section are too closely allied not to make
a success of ono without benefit!ing Iho
other. It is to the interest of the mer
chants and mechanics of Americas to
make our annual fairs a success—to make
them so attractive ns to drew to them the
people from all the counties surround
ing. If the business men of Americns
will but give the officers of the Fair Asso
ciation their hearty’support, our annual
fairs will soon become a prominent utid
attractive feature of Southwest Georgia.
It should be the aim of every ^citizen of
Americns to attract the attention of the
people of this whole section to Amerieus,
nnd the Fair offers n good opportunity of
so doing.
A Seasonable Publication.
The Fall number of Ehrich s Fashion
Quarterly will be found particularly use
ful to all ladies who contemplate thut
most delightful of feminiue occupations
—shopping. Within the compass of its
ono hundred and twenty pages, it con
tains a compendium of the whole art and
mystery of retail purchasing, giving de
scriptions of tho latest styles in every de
partment, with a complete list of pi ices,
and ii really bewi'dering array of illustra
tions. Aided by this useful publication,
a lady can plan out lier shopping for tho
season, with an absolute certainty that
no necessary item will be overlooked, and
that every dollar will be nindo to do its full
and utmost duty. Whether sho make
her purchases by mail or from shopkeep
ers nearer home, tho Fashion Quarterly
is equally useful. In either case it shows
her just what styles are fushionable, as
well ns which are the most ccouoinical;
and. studying its pages, a lady can adapt
her expenditure to her means, and nvoid
the vexation of findiug. too late, that un
witting extmvoganco in one direction en»
tails inconvcniont economy in another.
The Fashion Quarterly is published by
Ehrich Bros., Eighth Avenue, New York,
at 50 cents a year, or 15 cents a copy. It
is amply worth its price.
GENERAL PRESENTMENTS.
—OF TIIK—
GRAND JURY OF HUMTRIlCOUNTY.
First Week.
Georgia—-Sumter County.
We, the jury ompanneled for the first
week of October Term, 1882, of Sumter
Superior Court, beg icavc to make the fol
lowing general presentments:
Through our committees we have ex
amined the public buildings, tho roads,
bridges, poor house und farm, and the
various offices, books, accounts and
vouchers of the various officers of the
utility. and report us follows:
I'L'RI.IC UIULOINOS.
The Court bouse we find inadequate to
the public necessities, its well u* unworthy
of the people of the wealth and civiliza
tion of Sumter county. We therefore rec
ommend tlmt the Commissioners ot the
county take such steps looking to an
early disposition of the Court house and
s juare belonging thereto, and the erec
tion of a more commodious and substan
tial edifice on u more quiet plat in the
city of Amerieus. We find some repairs
needed to the fence around the (*ourt
house Square, which we recommend the
County ConuniKftinnerH to tmvodone if the
exchequer of the county will permit.
We find the jail kept in u manner look
ing to the comfort and security of tho
prisoners. We find some needed repairs,
but as this has been mentioned by former
grand jurors, and no attention paid to it,
we refrain from mentioning it here.
POOR HOUSE AND FARM.
We find tho inmates of tho poor house
to be twenty: ono outside drawing rations,
she being blind aud very old, her daugh
ter looks to her welfare. There uru ten
(10) whites, and teu (10) colored inmates.
The buildings in the main are good. T<S.
roof of one of the buildings needs being
re-covered. We find the inmates well
provided for and well satisfied.
ON TIIK HOOKS OF COUNTY OFFICERS. |
There can bo no exception taken to the
neatness and care bestowed by the officers
in the several departments of Ordinary,
Sheriff. Clerk Superior Court. Clerk (’onn
ty Court, Tax Receiver, Collector and
Treasurer. As to the books of the Collec
tor and Receiver we feel authorized in
saying that they are unexceptional, both
in uratnes* und accuracy.
ON ROADS AND HU!DOE*.
The roads und bridges throughout the
country are in a bad condition, and we
feel it our duty to present both the C(jun
to rigidly enforce studiof any Ordinances i
they may have regarding tho registering ;
of the brands and marks of cattle or beef j
offered for sale in the city; and we further j
recommend to stock owners to register !
their marks and brands with the Ordinary j
of the county as provided by law.
We find the bonks of the Justice of the :
Pence of the 75i»th and H84th Districts in
good stylo and entries correct. The Jus- ,
tiers of the other Districts of the county
have not presented their dockets as the
law requires for examination, owing, we 1
think, ton misunderstanding ot the law.
J. F. Wood, N. P. nnd Ex-Officio J. P. of ’
2Htli District, G. M., tendered bis resigna- j
