When I announced mysell'a can

brand "every misrepresentation and
falsehood that was made of me
during the rate. I expected such
things, of course, as it inevitably
follows every canvass where princi
ple is shunned and the strong point
is an appeal to the passions and
prejudice of the voter; but that
dirty work has usually been left to
the political bummers, camp fol
lowers and party scavengers that
infest every campaign and seek to
gain a cheap notoriety with their
own class, and the equally equip-

It is a well established fact that I cd in his organ, as follows:
the success of the planting interest | “Judge Harrell s history was re
depends to a greater or less extent j viewed. He went to the war as a
upon diversified farming. The all • captain from Webster conn*
cotton plan has proved a failure,as j ty, stayed two or three months, re-
under that system the farmers, I signed when things got rather warm
year after year, would find them-1 for poetic fervor and found a refuge
selves in debt. To raise a sufficient j from trouble, a boom proof, on the

self-Himtainiiig is found to he a ne
cessity. Now is the time to sow
oats and every farmer should turn
them under. There is nothing that
can so well supplement a short
crop. Many farmers In this com
munity made almost their entire
crop this year feeding (heir stock
on oats alone. Fall oats arc a
much more certain crop limn when
they arc planted in the spring anil I
the yield is much larger. The
portancc ol the oat crop should not
he overlooked.
•H UGE HARRELL'S CARD
In another column will be found
a card from Judge Harrell, in
which he denies a charge made
against his war record in the Re
publican's report ol Judge Crisp’s
speech in this city, anil at the same
time lakes occasion to make sever
al charges against Judge Crisp’s
political record. Wo presume
Judge Crisp can explain away the
charges prelcrred against him as
easily us Judge Harrell lias ex
plained away the charges made
against him. It is unfortunate
that political campaigns in this
oouutry cannot lie eonlined to a
discussion ol principles, hut it is
so, null he who enters tlm political
arena must expect to have all his
acts and motives distorted into
their worst shapes, with no remedy
hut a public refutation of the
charges which may lie preferred
against him. .
The negroes have always hereto
fore felt under more or less obliga
tion to the republican party for
their freedom. While they have
been slaves to the bosses in the
republican party, it begins to look
as if they felt the debt of obliga
tion is cancelled, and the colored
people are now about to taken hand
in their own emancipation. The
illobc, a paper published in New
York by colored men, and the or
gan of tho negro race. Ims this sig.
nlflcant paragraph in a late issue:
; “It cannot be denied that the re-
publican party In this state has been
captured by mouopoly power, and
the rest of the war." I had heard
the same charge made as rumors
and the savings of unnamed parties
anil only waited until it was made
direct to brand it as false, which I
now do. I went to the war in
April, ISC!,'and returned in Sep
tember or October, 1862, for causes
which the following certificate will
show:
Ucorgia, Webster County. I do
certify that II. II, Harrell returned
from the war in Virginia in Sep
tember or llrst of October, 1862,
nfllictcil with a dangerous chrome
discusc and completely disabled. J
was his family physician and treat
ed him for over two years und lie
never regained hcnllli snllicienl for
active service until long after the
war. This, (let. 26, 1882.
X. C. Alston, Sr., M. I).
Hud I been disposed to follow
tile example of Judge Crisp and
others, and made the canvass on
personal issues, 1 had plenty of
materiul todo so.
1st. I hml the information that
Judge Crisp ran for Ordinary in
Schley County, in 1868, on the
Radical ticket with Bullock, Jones,
etc., and was icferred to Maj. S. K.
Kason, Judge Singletary, Tom
Baisden, Jr., Urecnc Cheney ami
other respectable citizens of tlmt
county as knowing that fact.
2d. The statement Greene Che
ney made, in presence of Judge W
A. Hawkins, Col. M. II. Riamlfot'l,
II. II. Hinton and others, that lie
knew that Judge Crisp joined the
l.oynl I .vague to secure his elec
tion.
.'Id. That Ins nomination was pro
cured by duress and fraud. Duress
in this, that numbers of the demo
cratic voters of tho district were
parties litigant in the counties over
which lie was presiding judge, ami
that fact deterred them Iron) op
posing him for fenr that it would
prejudice their eases. I have heard
some of them say so. Fraudulent
in this, that in some of the coun
ties insufficient notice of the ap
pointment of delegates was given.
