A young mail of Sutnter county deter
mined to go and ar e tho show last Friday
and after seriously debating the question,
ho decided to ask his sweetheart to ac
company him, and also enjoy the sights
of seeing tho elephant, the zebra, the lion,
the clown, the gloriously spangled actors
in the arena, and in fact nil the things,
cost what it might, but he reckoned
without the necessary experience when
he thought he could get along on $2.50.
The little bilb tdcaux was written with
the most eflusive care, ond with high
hopes and sweet dreams he dispatched it
on its errand. With fluttering heait and
bated breath tore open the answer, and
with n sigh of relief he trad that it "would
ntford her exquisite pleasure." The fatal
day arrived, and arm in arm they walked
to the grounds, but about 15 minutes too
early for the big show to open, The nil-
ver tongued orator on the box with light
ning like rapidity enumerated the num
erous curiosities to be seen in the side
show, and our young friend went in. This
was but tho beginning. If there was
anything offered for sale on the grounds
and in the canvas that that young mun
didn’t buy, be was not awure of it, for
when he invoiced himself the next morn-

near making all mankind kin, us tho cir
cus. Fight it ns we may, there is a feel
ing in the breast of saint and sinner alike
that seems to be aroused by the excitement
incident to (lie show, and wo find the
good dencon escorting his children to the
menagerie, and they in turn escorting
him to the best seat to view the perform
ance in the ring. Side by side are seated
the politician and tho planter, tho law
yer and the laborer, the rich ami the
poor, for two brief hours to bo swayed
by the same emotions, to laugh nt the
same jokes, astonished and delighted by
the same feats of agility. The pidcnt in
fluence of tho magic ring for a time levels
all distinctions and brings us all upon
one plaue. In this.perhnpH, can bo found
the moral mission of the show, and if it
can for only a brief time destroy or allay
the strifes of occupation and station, it
has done a good work. If there are ;sor-
nions iu stones, why should there not be
sermons in shows? The practical preach
er, who upon being remonstrated becuuso
he allowed his choir to indulge in some
thing more than the regular long metre
music, replied that he "did not believe in
giving the doyil ull the good music," was
right, and there is no good reason in sin
ning aguinst nature by giving the devil
all tbe amusement.
