“It isn’t cheerful lor the poor olil
chap I’m going to take with me.”
replied Collins, “lie isn't so very
old though, lint nil biokcn up with
trouble. A few years ago no one
thought lie would end his days in
the poorb.usc.”
“Who is ho ?” asked the young
artist with a slight touch of in
terest.
His name is Ocorgc Stebbins.
lie was born and brought up near
the village we m o bound for. When
quite young he went West, and,
by hard labor, accumulated a snug
fortune. Then he came back, built
a handsome house, furnished it and
then brought his wife and two chil
dren, a girl and boy, to live in it.
The boy was drowned while skat
ing, nnd the shock killed Ids wife;
she died suddenly of heart disease.
The widower lived oif for some
time with bis young daughter and
several servants. Then be .cut the
child to a boarding bcIiooI, closed
the house and went to New York.
Aftora few years he returned,nnd
his daughter, whom I have been
told was as pretty as a picture,
kept kouso for him. He was proud
of her and liked to show off her
beauty to the gay city chaps who
visited him.
“One time a party of gentlemen
came to sec him. He took them
up in the mountains on a hunting
expedition; when they returned
his daughter, Eunice, was gone;
eloped with one of his chums.
“The neighbors hadn’t much
sympathy for Stebbins. They
blamed him for throwing bis moth
erless child into the society of n
lot of men, many of whom were
well known profligates.”
“Did he ever hear of her again?”
interrogated Howland, who Imd
listened with interest to the uara-
tive.
“No. Soon after the enlopcment
it came out that he had lost all his
money . speculating; iiis place wus
heavily mortgaged, and ho was
literally swamped. He went awny
to search for Eunice, returning
occasionally to ask il any one had
seen or beard of her. He seemed
to think she would wander back to
her old home. Each time lie ap
peared more crushed and hopeless.
A few years ago he arrived in the
mer, then died. While she lived
liic old man did not notice the
child much, but alter site was gone
it was pitiful to see the way he
clung to it. I promised him'that
baby Eunice should follow his re
mains to their last resting place,
and if you would like to go along
you can sec her.”
Howlnnd accepted the invitation,
nnd expressed a desire to look up
on tlie mnn whom King Death hud
set ids imperial seal.
Tho wish was granted, and before
the coflin lid was closed be inadu a
sketch of tlie dend face.
The story of George Stebbin’s
life and sad ending was related to
me by my friend E. R. Chadwick.
When be paused I said:
“And the child Eunice, wlmt be
came of her?"
“Rowland ndopted nnd educa
ted her.”
At that moment n young girl
came into the studio. Seeing mo
she wus about to retire, when lie
beckoned her to approach.
“This is my niece, Ernestine,”
be said, placing bis arm about her.
“How nro you progressing this
morning?”
“Not nt all satisfactorily,” she
replied. “Wilt you please coino
and look at it?”
“Miss Chadwick isattemping to
portray her conception of the maj
esty of death,” explained her uncle
as we passed into an adjoining
room, where on an easel 1 beheld
the picture that imd evidently
caused the young artist much
anxious thought.
“Here,” said my friend, "Is a
photograph of tho original when i-i
the flush of health, und this is a
rough sketcli of tho same man when
dead.”
I gazed at bolli; then at the pic
ture on tlie easel, but knew too lit
tle about painting to venture an
opinion.
“You have made tlie dead face
luminous with joy, Ernestine,” ob
served her uncle, regarding the
work with a critical eye.
“I tried to illumine how bis (reed
spirit must have felt when first be
holding the dear ono lie bad loved
and lost while on earth,” she re-,
plied dreamily.

flood of silvery light, while at their
base lies the placid Hudson, its
shimmering surfaco reflecting the
twinkling stars that are looking
down in all their silent splendor
from tho azure zenith. Directly in
front of tho girl, and tending to the
tout ensemble, a soft warmth of
coloring not otherwise obtainable
is a large jar. Immediately behind
it stands Hercules Perkins.
“I am going away,” he says.
Tho girl docs not reply. The
shadow of the doughnut jar con
cealed tho look of a haunting fear
that passed across her face, and
the white lines around the droop
ing mouth nrc not seen by the ono

“Shall you miss me?” he asks.
Tho little wbito hand that rests
upon the back of a ohair is trem
bling now, and in the deep brown
eyes there are hot tears of sorrow
and pain. Suddenly Ilelno speaks.
“Go away,” she says in agonized
tones. "Go nwny,” before I tell
you that whicli had better remain
unsaid,” and sobs choked her ut
terance.
A great light breaks upon Her
cules. Stepping quickly to the
girl’s side, he places his arm
around bor. “Tell me, sweetheart,”
he say% “do you love me?”
For answer sho places a soft

lie bends over to kiss her tbo other
