Official Organ of the City of Amcrlcus.
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER14, ’N2.
It don't require an opera glass to
tell who the Constitution favors
for Senator.
Before wo forget it, we would
like to enquire what has become of
tbe Lamar-Colquitt affair?
Hon. Emory Speer lias gone to
Washington. It is intimated that
be will take up his permanent res
idence in that city and practice
law.
About $.5,000 changed hands in
Athens on the result of the recent
election. One man bought a house
and lot with his winnings on Can
dler.
There will he a large number of
able Democratic statesmen in the
next Congress. The danger is that
too many of them will want to be
on top.
Atlanta lias received 10,000 bales
of cotton up to date, less than she
did last year. Last year 01,000;
tills year 51,000. We leave olf odd
hundreds.
General Chalmers, the renegade
Democrat and the hero ol Fort
Pillow, has been elected by the ne
groes to Congress from a Missisip-
pi district.
Mr. .To. Brown had something
to say about “bosses” in Sunday’s
Constitution, lie seems to have
looked up Webster as to the defi
nition of the word.
To-day the legislature will begin
balloting for U. S. Senator from
Georgia. It is probable that Gov.
Colquitt will be elected for the
loug term and Pope Barrow for
the short.
New Orleans is reported to be in
darkness o'niglits because it has
not paid its gas bills. It is said to
owe $200,000 for gas, and lias fail
ed to make payments according to
■contract—hence the darkness.
The total vote of Uichmond
county for congressman at large,
and for Hon. Seaborn Bccso for
congressman for lli n 8lli district
was: For Hnrdclnnn, 048; for Kecsc,
551. That is small fur one of the
largest voting counties in the state.
If the population ol Gcorgiu were
estimated by the number of votes
polled on Tuesday last, the repre
sentation of the state in congress
would bo cut down so low tlint she
would scarcely lie entitled to even
a congressman at large.
Clinrlcs E. IS lay buck a brother of
the St. Louis lawyer recently kill
ed, in conversation with u well
known theatrical manager recent
ly; said that lie could not harbor
feelings of revenge against Col.
Cockcrlll and that his brother's
hasty conduct was to blame for his
misfortune.
A few years ago Gov. St. John,
of Kansas, rode into power, a pop
ular idol, on the crest of the tem
perance wave. 11c had siezed up- j ol money by it."

Tbe chain gang prisoners in At
lanta made a dash for liberty on
Thursday night and eight made
good their escape. All were
negroes, and were serving out terms
of from ten days to thirty days.
Koine, with n population of on
ly 8,000 inhabitants, can beat the
world on twin babies. In the last
few weeks four pairs have been
born, and in the past year eight
pairs. These are all of white pa
rents, no account having been tak
en of the colored.
The following instance of speedy
justice we find in tbe Griilin Daily
News: “A negro stole thirty dol
lars from J. I. Oxford, his employ
er, at Sunny-side, Tuesday morning,
while he was asleep, and left for
McDonough. Mr. Oxford got up
and missed his money, and at once
suspected the negro. He discov
ered his track on the public road,
and started after him in his shirt
sleeves, tracing him by the toes out
of his slices on his left foot. About
9 o'clock he caught the negro near
McDonough, recovered twenty-live
dollars of the money and brought
him before Judge Becks, of this
city, where he confessed the crime,
and was sentenced to the chain
gang for 12 months. This may be
regarded as a very expeditious
transaction.”
The Honey in Ilouey nml Bees.
Monroe Advertiser: “How is
your apiary coming on?” we ask
ed Mr. Frank Wilder.
My bees arc getting on nicely,
but they have not made honey to
amount to anything in the last few
weeks. The storm of the ninth of
September seemed to stop the hon
ey flow in some way or other. At
any rate, my bees have not made
much honey since then.”
Hare you sold many bees this
year?”
“Not a great many bees, but
quantities of honey. I have made
enough on my apiary to pay the
provision bill for my family this
year, and also the expenses of my
farm.”
We expressed surprise nt this
statement, but Mr. Wilder assured
us it is a fact. “What is the big-
nest yield you have had this year
from one hive?”
“I have one hive from which 1
have obtained 350 pounds. I would
not take $50 for that colony. That
is the biggest yield 1 ever heard
of except in one case. Thero is u
man in Texas who reports seven
hundred pounds as the product of
one colony in one year. That is
enormous, and I never heard of
the hick boforo.”
"I have now fifty hives,” contin
ued Mr. Wilder, “and I cannot at
tend to them and to my other bus
iness. I believe I lost a thousand
pounds of honey in September by
not being able to attend to the
bees when they needed it. 1 in
tend to bring out a young man
from Ohio next spring—if I can
get the right sort of a one, and put
him in charge of my apiary. I am
satisfied that I can make a great

A Novel Revision.
Nkw Bi.ooMi'iei.n, Nov. 11.—A
case Ims lieeu oil trial hero all the
week which is of more than orili-
nary importance to the public, In
nsmnch ns it turns upon n point of
law never yet passed upon liy the
supreme court. It is the case of
Mrs. B. F. Bice, vs. The Woman's
Benevolent Aid Society. The plain-
tilf insured her mother, Mrs. Sa
rah lekesin the society for $1,000
lor her (the plaintiffs) bcnclit. In
the application Mrs. lekes gave
her age ns sixty-tbree to sixty-four.
The fact was that she was seventy-
seven at tlint time. She died with
in three months afterward. The
insurance company claimed to he
not liable on the ground that the
age of the insured was misstated.
The plnintilf contended that the
old lady believed that she was only
C3 to 64 and gave her age honestly
ns she remembered it, and therefore
she was not guilty ol any fraud or
deception. The jury found for the
plaintiff. This case raises the new
point, viz., whether the applicant’s
belief is to form the ground of con
tract with tbe insurance company,
or whether it is tbe truth of the
ract stated by the applicant that
must form that ground.
