W. L. OLEtMER, Editor.
Ono year ago to-day we took
charge of the Recorder. We were
an ontire stranger, not only having
no acquaintances in the city and
county,.but coming from an entire
ly different section of country and
nnacqnafnted' with the'customs ~6f
the people of oar new Uothe. It is
not strange, unffer these circum
stance, that our hopes of success
were mingled-with fears, liut we
wen met with inch a hearty wel
come irom the people, were made
to feci so at homo, that our fears
soon vanished and we became con
fident of success tli rough labor.
And we have labored, honestly and
hardly, to not only make the He
corded a livo paper, one whose vis
its would be pleasant and welcome
to its large family of readers, but
to advance the interests of the city,
county and section which we had
made our home, and it is gratify
ing to us to know that our efforts
are appreciated, and tlmt to-day
the Recorded is recognized as an
honest representative of the sec
tion in which it it published. In
thus reviewing the past year we
desire to thank the people orthi
section for the kind treatment and
many courtesies they have extend
cd to us. Tiiey have made us lcel
that we were welcome, that' they
desired our succoss—that they
were ever ready to extend a help
ing hand and a aordial greeting to
every man who comes among them
to pursue an honorable calling, no
matter whether he comes from the
North, East or West. They ..pave
shown a spirit that must in time
bring among them entei prising and
earnest men from all sections, who
will aid in developing the resources
of the country and make South
western Georgia the most prosper-
ons section'd the Union. It will
be ono of the aims ut the Recorder
to make known to tho people of
other sections tho advantages ol
this section nnd invite them to set-
tie among us, nnd to benr testimo
ny to the sincerity of the invitation
on tho part of our people.
In the year upon which wc have
just entered, being netter acquaint
ed with the country nnd the peo
ple, we hope to make the Recorder
a better pnpor than it tins been in
the past, and shall always endeav
or to advance tlie mercantile nnd
industrial interests of this section
of the State. Having become in
intorcst and in law n citizen of
Georgia, it shall lie our pride and
pleasure to ever speak n word in
praiso of the grand old Empire
State of the South, ami do all in
our power to keep It at the head
of the column of progress am)
prosperity. In politics wc shall ail
vocate what wc deem to lie true
Democratic principles—the admin
islration ol the government in
such a manner as will confer the
greatest gcod to the greatest num
ber. Iu so doing wc expect to
treat our political opponents with
the .same fairness and liberal spirit
as wc would like shown to us. And
cow, wishing that the coming year
may bring to our readers peace
and prosperity, we ask a continu
ance of tbs same-liberal support
tbat has been accorded to us du
ring the pu-t year.
The country Itafi four kinds of

GENERAL PRESENTMENTS
—OF THE—
GRAND JURY OF LEE COUNTY.

Superior
leave to Bubdiif'Hh# following
General Presentments: * j
g We bxvMbrongfc^ha pronsr commit
tees, examined Pie books of Ae Notary's
Public and Ex-officio Justices of tbe Peaco
and find them kepi in tlie terms ef die
law, all charges fur co.ts being properly
muds anil itemized.
We bnvo slso ixunincd, tbe Records
in Ibe uffiees ul tbe Ordinary/Clerk of tbe
Superior Court: - and Slier iff and find
them kept in n stylo creditubls to tko.e
officers. "
We have also examined the books ot
tbe County Commissioners and find them
neatly ke pt, ami tlmt they have issued or
ders since butt March term of court to the
amount of $2,760.16.
We find tbe court bonse in good repair
with the following exceptions; Teat there
is some plastering off iu different places,
and that the steps outlie west side of tbe
house n-ed some repairs. Tlie j til we also
find in good repair excep tbat tlm windo ws
need some panes of glaas. We recom
mend that the Courmissionera provide
Ibe Ordinary's office with proper shelves
and deska tor books and papers belong-
i- g to that office.
HOADS AND DII1DOES.
We find tbe roads of tbe county in
good condition with tbe txoeption of tbe
lurn-piko roud Irom neur Starkevilie to
the bridge across Muckalee Creek, and
tlie turn-pike near J. 8. Green's iu Cbokee
district. The bridges of *ho county that
are standing all need r-piirs to souio ex
tent. Tlie bridgt across Fowltown creek
near Palmyra we find to be in u very bad
condition, so much so that it is dangerous
to cross wiib teams, nnd we recommend
tlmt tbe County Commissioners proceed
at once to have it repaired. We would
suggest that the old plsnk from the top
and floor of tbe old bridge near Lees
burg, known as the Jackson bridge, be
used in making said repairs. Als> that
tho turn-pike bridges in Chokco district
liavo all been washed away, nnd tbat they
have not been replaced, very tnuch to
the inconvcnicnco of tho citizens of that
listiict. We recommend and respectful
ly urge tlie nuthi-ritius to hnvo them.re
placed at once, us well as the bridgo
Leesburg known as Jackson biidge. In
regard to other bridges tlmt have been
washed away we loavo to tbe judgment
of the Commissioners ns to when they
repaired. Wc find that in
Palmyin district tlmt there nre only two
llond Conimi-sioncrs. Wo request II
hoard of Couuty Commissioners to ap
point another to make out the number
reqilirod by law. We most respectfully
urge pur Uunril of Cotumi-sioners to us-
diUigcnco in having tlie bridges rebuilt
it once, ns there is groat complaint being
made of their seeming tardiness in tlie
matter, and some threats nfanit for d un-
being brought ugainst tho county.
It has Ir on r-polled to this body that
an account of tiro bridge across Kinclm-
fooncti at Palmyra being washed away,
(li ttlie colored pcoplo on tlm oiberside of
he creek arc separatisl Irom their church,
and teat Lewis Dixon, a colored caypen-
', is willing, for fiftoiu or twenty do!-
a, to umke a crossing for foot pass -n
gera across said cri-ok. We therefore
request the Cointnissiunera to employ
him to fix the same, provided it cun be
ilouu for said sum.

W. D. Wells, County Treasurer, $1,450.64.
Tne rate of taxation fir this j ear is $1.02 on
tbe thousand more than lust year, ow
ing to several causes, chief of which is the
neglect on the part of the County Com-
mi.-.si oners to reaesess property returned
at less than a fair valuation at the proper
time, which makes the tax for the present
year more burdensome on some thun^
others. We deem it unnecessary to make
any changes on the tux books for th6
present year, ns a good number have al
ready paid their taxes. We find upon
examination of the Ordinary's books and
accounts tlmt .me account by James S.tl-
ter, Sheriff, for carrying Louisa McGhee,
an adjudged lunatic, to the lunatic Asy
lum for $40.50, which charge we be
lieve to he excessive. We therefore re
quest th6 Ordinary when such services
are necessary in future tliut he employ
some responsible person at tho lowest
per diem, as It is to the best interest of
tho county. We n commend that the pay
of Grand, and Tmvvrse Jurors for the
next y*ar be $2.00 per day, and the pay of
Bailiffs be $2 00 per day, except special
Bailiffs, and that they shall receive $3.00
per day.

The Rev. Tlieo-lore I-. Cuvier
endeavors in the Evangelist to re
move all doubt, that Daniel VV'ob.te

says it might ns well be denied that
Hamilton was killed in a duel as
that “tlie creat orator of Hunker
Hill was painfully addicted, during
tlie last dozen years of his life,
to ardent spirits, anil on public- oc
casions was visibly inebriated.” A

Mr. C'uyler tlmt lie once saw Web

seeing him on board a Sound

which I will in a few days throw open, are packed with goods
which there is not room for on the main floor, and all things
are now ready.
A Cordial Invitation is Extended to All
to visit my establishment. All old customers and friends will
come. A well pleased enstomer is the best advertisement, and
it is my hope that every one whom 1 shall have the pleasure of
serving will be so well satisfied that they will send all their
friends to sec me when they visit this city.
