ckinery. As we entered, Mr. Davenport
was explaining to some visitors the man
ner in which the cotton need was hulled
and crushed, and as the process moy bo
of interest wo will give it as near os we
understand it.
A workman stands in an outside r'om
and shovels the seed into a mml screen,
ftom where it is hoisted by an tlevnter to
the linter. At the linter the surplus o t-
ton is taken off, cleaned and rolled out,
when it is bagged. Tbe seed is elevated
to tho huller, where the hull is taken off
and spouted into tbe engine room. The
kernel, after going through a sifter, is
spouted to the crusher, and comes through
lhat in thin wafers. It is taken up nml
cooked then, when it is ready for the
prens. After the oil is extracted, the cake
is ground up into meal. From the prtss
the oil runs into a large tank and is
pumped ont as needed. The machinery
is all of improved make, and is ns nicely
arranged as it could possibly bavo been
done. Mr. Gillespie, tbo supcrioti ndent,
put lip all of the machinery, nnd had
neverseen any like it before, although ho
had been superintendent of the Mont
gomery Oil Mill, and understood thor
oughly how to use it.
The capacity of tho mill when run
ning on full time, is four barrels of oil
per day. Fourteen hands are employed,
seven for day and seven for night work.
The engine is a powerful one, nnd has all
the modem improvements.
For the first day or so n great deal of
troublo was experienced in getting every
thing in thorough working order, as belts
would expand nnd fall off, and numer
ous things get slightly ont of fix, owing
to everything being new anil untried.
By this time, however, everything is
working smoothly.
A great many of tbe people of this city j
imagine that tlio mill will not boa pay-

try sum.ntiding it, for it will make mon

The Need of the Hoar.
From our recent painful experience wo
are convinced that t"e ioventive genius of
this country has not been turned in the
right channel. Burglar proof saf.*s with
time-looks, enclosed in iron-walled vaults
are well enough in their place; steel traps
and shot guns are good in their way, but
the great need of this country is a thief-
proof chicken coop—one which will call
up all the poultry at sundown, put them
to roost, lock the door with a time-lock,
and fill with bird shot cwry dusky de
mon who comes within gun-shot of it
dnrirg the night. Fortune, tame and tbe
blessings otall civil:z -d pc< pie await the
dan who will torn bin i.vuntive talents
in this direction.

POLITICS.
Politics is a business what is followed
by a good many people, but mighty few
of ’em ever get rich by it. Of course it
is necessary tlmt the country should be
saved every year, the constitution im.ln-
tuined, and nil thst sort of thing, but the
only pay in it goes to the fellows who
goes to Congress and i>ccupy Gubernato

notion is tlmt one of those nice easy chairs
at D. B. Hill's furniture store is a heap
more comfortable than the one Governor
Stephens sets in, and a heap cheaper to
get, for lie sells them mighty low down,
and has got all styles. But goin* hack
