THE TOMB OF JACKSON.
* VV 8Zii;?:wtinvT?:.' k ” a, ‘
' Jfarttllle C'irrcf pondcftco of Ooorler-JoiirinL
The “Hermitage” ie approached
through a long row of cedars on
either hand. Here, in this quaint
old Dnllding, main rooms and shed
rooms of brick, with wooden
chtumns and wooden coping in
front, resides Col. Andrew Jack-
son, adopted grandson ol the hero,
with his wife and mother and two
old negroes, man and wife, about
16 years old when purchase 1 bv
Jackson, nearly sixty years ago.
Gen. Jackson and his wile sleep
side by side in the little garden
near the residence, each beneath a
broaJ granite slab. Inservcd in
old fashioned Homan letters are
tbo words on the slab which covers
Mrs. Jackson, composed by her
devoted husband.
“Here lies t*o remains of Mrs.
Rachel Jarkson. wile of President :
Jnokton, who died the JtM Dec.
1828.” The old hero hud been !
elected President his lirst term, >
but did not take hin seat until t
March 4 following. The inscrip- i
lion recounts her virtues in words j
forcible and tender, and closes:
“A being so geutlo and yet so i
virtuous, vile slander might wound, j
but could not dishonor. Even j
Death, when her tore lie from the j
arms of her husband, could hut '
transport her to the bosom of her
God."
The day of the funeral Jackson, 1
feeble and brokcn-henrled, walked !
slowly behind the coffin, leaning |
upon a long cane he was accustom-j
cd at that time to carry about bis |
farm. As the friends of the dead I
gathered about to look for the last
time upon her lace, Gen. Jackson j
lifted his cane, as if appealing to i
heaven, and by a look commanding j
silence, said, slowly and painfully '
and with a voice full of bitter tears. I
“In tlie presence of this dear j
saint I can and do lorgive all mv j
enemies I Hut those vile wretches !
who have slandered her must look i
to God for mercy.”
,.:Ono of the most beautiful and!
redeeming trails of this rugged i
and heroic nature was the unaltcr- i ~
able love and devotion lie bore bis !
wife. For seventeen years nflcr j
her death the men ory of this noble j
woman was cherished, until the j
summer of 1845, when he was laid j
to rest beside the only woinnn ho
ever loved—loved with a romantic
tenderness and strength surpass-1
ing the drenm of Action.
