A New Encyclopedic Dictionary.
The Century Co. announces for
immediate puDlicatlon in this coun
try. from advance sheets, the new
edition of the Imperial Dictionary,
a work which has been accepted
in Great Britain for more than a
quarter of a century as a standard
lexicon of the English language.
The new edition has been in prep
aration for more than ten years,
and so greatly hnB the vocabulary
been augmented nnd so extensive j
and important arc the changes re-'
suiting from the revision, that the !
Imperial Dictionary, as now issued
may almost claim to he a new work. :
It contains about 180,000 words, j
With 3,000 illustrations. As the [
real meanings of words nnd In-
grammatical constructions into
which they enter are generally
most' clearly shown by means of
illustrative quotations, vast num
bers ot these nrn given, many thou
sands of them being inserted in tin-
present edition for tiie first time.
The cncyclopn-dic character of
this dictionary is said to add great
ly to itn usefulness as a hook of i
reference, and to relieve it < f the ;
imputation common to dictionaries |
of being unattractive reading, it,
does not coniine itself merely to j
giving the meanings of words; it :
gives also, as a rule, some account !
of the things to wliiuh words are I
applied, going more fully into gen-1
oral and scientific particulars th hi |
has been hitherto the practice in
diotionaricH.
The work is complete in Eng
land, and will be issued here, us it
is there, in tour volumes of con- >
venient size, each containing 7U0 :
to 800 pages. The price in this
country will be lower limn that in
England.

By general consent the day is
supposed to begin in longitude 1K0
degrees from Greenwich, the meri
dian of which crosses the l'aciflc
ocean. The only known land upon |,VYVS & H lIlWEJJ/S
this line where a man could stand
is in the northeastern corner of
Asia and two or three little islands.
By looking at a terrestrial globe it
will readily be perceived that the
point where the day begins must
depend entirely upon what prime
meridian is chosen. If we say it
i< tine neon when the sun crosses
the meridian of Washington, then
the day began on a line running
nearly through the centre of Asia.
