Improved Cotton Said.
The problem of profitable cotton muk
ing is Inst being solved, and with ildies
Ibe old system of cultivation. Forty ueres
to the mule was all very well when the
laud was new and labor cheap and plen
tiful; but in this day when farming to
be made paying must he run upon strict
business principles, less ground and bet
ter attention ia demanded. These facta
are fast being recognized by the more
progressive farmers, and the sooner it
becomes general the belter it will he for
our country. Farmers like Mnj. J. F.
Jones, of Troup, and Hon. Parish Fur
man, of Baldwin, have struck the keynote
of success—what ia called Iho intensive
system, which ia nothing more than thor
ough preparatioD.thorougU mnnnringand
the use of the best seed. Maj. Jas. F.
Jones' suoocss as a progressive fnrmor
should be unsurpassed in the State. His
improvod prolifio cotton loss taken the
premium wherever it lies been shown,
both for yield and quality. Being a
short-jointed, large boll und heavy hear
ing variety, it is just what our farmeis
want. Mr. J. E. Bivins Is Maj. Jones'
agent for our section.

lloms*Uade Sugar.
One of the groatest hurdons on the poor
is the sugar lax. The people pay $10,-
000,000 annually to keep up a Louisiana
production of only $22,000,000. If there
oan bo no tariff relief, chemistry may he
a popular deliverer. It is now said that
Professors Scoville and Webster, of the
Illinois State Industrisl University, have
solved the problem of manufacturing su
gar from sorghum. If this be so, Georgia
can make her own sweetening and that at
a cheap rate.
So says the Augusta Chronicle. Of
course there is no objection to onr mak
ing sugar out of sorghum, or out of any
thing elso; but the regular, standard su
gar-cane can be produced In Georgia with
so little trouble that our people need uot
resort to sorghum. The red, ribbon and
white cane all grow readily and luxuri
ously in this section and are largely used
by our people io making syrup, and
some few have made excellent sugnr by
the simplest process. Wo have beforo us
a sample of sugar made by Mr. O. N.
Mask, of this county, which compares
favorable with Orle«ns sugar, audit was
made simply by boiling the syrup very
thick and then placing it a hag, allowing
the syrnp| to slowly trickle oat end tho
sugar to granulate inside the hag. In the
manufacture of syrup cane has proved a
most profitable crop to onr farmers, and
with proper appliances we believe the
manufacture of sugar wonld prove far
more profitable. If sugar can be profita
bly made out of sorghum iu the North,
certainly it can be profitably made out of
tions.

Albany New*.
Iu the Cuthnliq church, Sunday eve
ning at 8:30, a scene of unusual interest
transpired in the celebration of tho mar
riage vows of two children of the Church,
vix: Mr. Francis X. Eagan and Miss Jane
Dunlavy. The occasion assembled, uot
only the band of the faithfUl, but n large
number of the non-Catholics of the city,
drawn thither by the novel and awe-in
spiring ceremony, as well as by the popu
larity of the contracting parties. Officiat
ing at the altar was Father Prendergast,
the venerated shepherd of the fold at this
place, whose competent couduot of the
services, assisted by the efficient ohoir,
could but impress even thoso outside of
the Church of Rome with the saoroduess
in which her children are joined together
in holy wedlock.
At the altar as attendants wore; Mr.
Mich. Coffey,of Americus, aud Miss Katie
Melvin, of Brunswick; Mr. Oscar N«un-
dorfer. of Camilla, and Mary Dunlavy, of
Albany; Mr. J. T, Coffey and Miss Mag
gie Crogan, of Americus. The church
was filled to overflowing, and the large
nudieiiee, wo may safely assort, was deep
ly impressed. Mrs. Fletcher at the organ
with her true execution, rendered Liszt's
Wedding March, which wus a feast to ev-
ory musical ear.
After services nt the church invited
guests assembled at the already prepared
house of the couple and participated in a
bounteous marriage feast. There, also
numerous and costly presents, betoken

held by their friends.
