THE GALLOWS IS UKOUGIA
Ilanglnaa In Parry and Rwalmboro.
I’eruy, Dec. 8.—Will Porter was
hanged here at 12:30 p. m. to day.
He had nothing to say. The drop
was cut at 12:30 p. m., and he fell
live feet and nine inches. Info
was pronounced extinct niter 24A
minutes. The crime for which
Porter suffered death was brutal
in the extreme. In September lust
he was passing Mossy creek, wliern
he met a negro boy named William
Swift, about 15 years. Swift had
previously lived at Perry, and the
iwo were acquainted, .lust previ
ous to the meeting, however, Swill
had been working at Macon, nnd
had accumulated some little mon
ey, with a pnrt of which lie had
purchased a suit of'clothes that, lie
was then wearing. When the two
met at Mossy creek, Porter said
that ho too was on his wav to Per
ry, and they continued the journey
together. Porter asked Swift to
go with him by a spring which was
in the woods. While walking along
Pcrtcr picked up a stick and struck
Swift on the back of the head.—
Swift fell and the blows were rain
ed upon him until lie was thought
to ho dead. Porter stripped him
of his clothing and left him, taking
along nil the articles of every kind
that the murdered man had about
him. When found Swift wus not
dead, but he died soon after. In
a few days Porter was arrested,
and on his trial was convicted. He
was defended by Mr. Buford Da
vis, his master in slavery times,
who acted .without compensation.
In pussing sentence upon him
Judge Simmons was much ullcctcd
on uccount of the fact that Porter
had been a servantjin his family.
In jail be confessed ills guilt and
professed forgiveness, lie said lie
expected to go to heaven.
Swainsiioko, Oa., Dee. 8.—Ed
ward Conyers, colored, aged
twenty-four years was bang
ed half mile from town at one-lliir-
ty Ibis p. iu., for the murder of
Northern Pierce, colored, on the
nineteenth of last A pril. The hang
ing was private, hut was witnessed
by the county commissioncns, phy
sicians, guards and proper nllicials.
Tlie condemned man was perfectly
at himself and seemed resigned to
his late. He died of strangulation.
The story of his crime is short.—
He and 1’ieree quarrelled at a tur
pentine still about a pig and a dog
and Conyers shot and killed Pierce
Ho was convicted iu October and
sentenced to death. While in jail
a few weeks ago he took a elmir to
pieces and when the jailer entered
with Inn uieal struuk him witli n
piece of the chair ami made a dash
for liberty. Outside Jlic found the
jail yard gate looked and Ills es
cape cut off Several men went to !
his relief. They found Conyers J
under the jail and took him out *
and chained him In his cell where i
he remainod until to-day.

ward sent to Mrs. Watson as a tes

The fiddling was exquisite. The

tune. When they marched into
the library with tiieir liddies under
their arms there is reported to have
been overwhelming applause. Jo
