Preston, whom you noticed as being in
Americus last week for the first timo in
eigh een years. Tho old mau stopped
near the Barlow House and gazed around
him with a bewildered air. “Yes, the
old town has grown a right smart,” ho re
peated. “I would hardly have known it."
His curiosity was ns great us a child’s, and
the signs were interesting studies to him.
Many years ago Mr. Estes was valnnblo to
the boys of Americus. At one time dur
ing or at the close of the war they ran
out of fish hooks, and not a hook or crook
could ba bought for money or meat. He
came to tho rescue and made the boye
hooks, and they will always hold his
memory in reverence for it.
lam not surprised that Mr. Estes did
not recognize Americus. Very few would

An Old Hand In a New Place.
There are few people in thisseetion
who do not know Mr. B. H. Jossey, who
haa been connected with the house of
Bosworth & Jossey. He has moved bis
base, having purchased the interest of
Chas. Crocker, of tho firm Crocker & Tul-
lis, and the new firm will be known as
Tullis A Jossey. Ho would be pleased to
seo all his old friends at his new quar
ters.

tion of the city of Americus, the follow

As wos expected by the manager, the
Americus Oil Company is in no danger of
running out rf seed with which to run
their mill. The mill is meeting with en
couragement from unexpected qunrters
now, nud in a substantial way. I was
shown a card the other day from a prom
inent man in a lower county who asked
for quite a number oi sacks in which to
ship cotton seed, at the same time staling
that he wanted the seed ground for the
meal there was in it. Next winter the
mill will have all it can do, even if it runs
incessantly. The stockholders intend
putting iu machinery soon for tho pur
pose of manufacturing ice. During
the summer they will deliver ice
“Those are nice for gifts," remarked a
Recorder man to Miss Agnes Aycock,
referring to tho Christmas numbers of
Harper's and The Graphic.
“Yes, they are selling fast, and nro very
pretty. The Graphic only costs 50 cents
and the Harper 75 cents, Harper has a

from the pen ot Joel Harris, author of
“Uncle Remus." I have some of his
books, also, that I bought for the holi
day trade."
“What have you for holidays?”
“Well," slio answered, meditatively,
“about every thing, I guess. If there is
anything I have forgotten, I don't remem
ber it. Here are somo Christmas cards,
that are very fashionable for gifts, and
here are somo of the nicest box pnpetries
I have ever had. They are cheap, too,
from 30 cents up.”
The paper in all was of fine quality
and the boxes handsomely covered with
silk nnd satin.
••I have something nice in Bibles, uud
have some to give away if people are too
poor to buy. Here,” she said, pointing
to a long table with shelves in t* e center
of the room, which were loaded down,
“are my toys, and 1 have everything,
from n tin whistle up, including tops,
wagons, jumping jacks, and a hundred
other things. In this show case,” open
ing one, “I have albums, cabinet stands,
odor cases, and they are the nicest ever
shown in town, I think, and nil things
nice.”
The cases were indeed nice, being of
cut glass nnd put up in leather. Looking
around farther, the reporter found every
thing that could be thought of fora pres
ent or lor holiday uso. Christmas can
dles, nice little things, colognes, plaques
for hnnd-paintiug, dolls, -from a tiny ton
full grown one, including one of French
