FROM AXUERS0NVILLR.
Andersonville, Feb. 20.—It was
the general expectation that An-
dcrsonvllle would be a dryfplace af
ter tho now law prohibiting the sale
of intoxicating drinks went into ef
fect, but it is not so. Clouds, rain,
wind, thunder, lightning, snow and
and hail have visited us since that
law took effect. I do not claim that
these visitations are the result of
that particular law, but mention
them as a matter of news.
So far as 1 know or hare
heard the prohibitory law is giving
general satisfaction, as well among
those that sold as those tbal-were
wont to quench their thirst with
the fiery liquid.
Business at this point is unusu<
ally good for this season of the
year; onr merchants have about as
much as they can comfortably at
tend to. 1 am told that in no pre
vtous year has so much guano been
bandied at this point. Should the
approaching season be favorable,
the farmers ma^ be able to pay for
it. I do not believe the crops raiS’
cd in Sumter county last year
would pay for the guano used in
their production. I mean, of
course, what was raised over and
above that needed for home con
sumption.
The school referred to in a for
mer letter was opened on Monday,
the 11th inst., with eighteen schol
are. Miss Mollie Cox, the teacher,
is well educated and luily qualified
to conduct a school in a manner
to benefit those attending, which
unfortunately, is not always the
case. Prof. Weaver’s school is in
a prosperous condition,as it well
deserves to be. Book-keeping and
the higher branches are thoroughly
taught at this excellent institution.
I hear nothing new as regards
the Buena Vista H. It., hut it is
considered settled that Anderson-
ville will be the terminus.
Mr. Harry C. Laird, of Sparta,
III., gave a musical and slight of
hand performance in the acliool
room last night. One of his feats
was to play on three instruments
at the same time, and while thus
engaged to commit to memory sev
eral verses ofa poem he had never
before seen.
A very heavy tLunder storm
passed over this section laet night.
The wind at one lime probably
reached filly to sixty miles per
hour. Capt. Kugene Sullivan, who
has been quite ill for some weeks,
is slowly improving, but is still
confined to the house.
Parties from Woodstock, Ct.,
Ogden, Iowa; York, Pa.; Oswego,
N. Y.; Gardner, Mass.; and Mt.
Union, Ohio, have recently been
in onr midst.

Dawson can boast of the hand

in Georgia.

We had almost a storm this
evening. Wind, dust and rain
drove ail indoors, while a great
many firmly believed a cyclone was
coming. The heavens are still
black, and tiio mutterings of the
distant thunder can be heard, but
old Boreas has retired to his cave,
Dawson is not a London in size,
nor a New York in population, but
it has its “wire workers" as well as
they, and its lobby members get
wonderful salaries, when oratory
and eloquence are desired Cicero
and Demosthenes would retire to
private life, if they could some
times bear the "silver tongued"
corner declaimers rehearse the
claims of their favorite candidates.
A looker on can but be amused
and wonder which one will c(
in “ahead of lime."
The LeConto pear, that delicious
fruit so highly prized in South
Georgia, is beginning to bo appre
ciated in our section. Several in
Dawson have planted largely, and
arc enthusiastic in its praise.
The Leap year and opposition
parties on the 29lh promise to

programme is "spicy.” Invite
