Miss Ada Gray, supported by Chas. A.
Watkins' 5th Avenue Combination, ap
peared in the above role Wednesday night
to a very fair house. The play was rush
ed through from tbe beginning, in order
that the troupe might catch the detestod
ten o’clock train. Most of ths light
comedy parts were cut out, and to save
time, change of costumes was entirely
dispensed with. As Lady Isabel and
Madame Vine Miss Gray portrayed Love,
Jealousy and Bsmorso to perfection, and
the death bed scenes brought tears to
the eyes of all. Had the usual length of
time been used, tbo play would have
been entirely satisfactory. As it was. a

highly appreciated. Many members of tbo
troupe havebeenwitbMr. Golden toayears,
and it is for this reason that the pieees he
puts on thf stage are uniformly well sol
ed—thete is not a star shd a number of
sticks, but every member is good in big
or her part. The silver band and orchoa-
tra which accompanies the troupe is first-
class, and our people will hear some fine
music—we speak positively, for we know
several members of the band and know
that they stand at the head. That we aro
not alone in our opinion of the Goldens is
shown by the following from the St. Louis
Daily Republican:
.The patrons of the opera house had a
genuine surprise last week in the “Plan-
ter’s Wife" performance. The play and
the company came here without previous
acquaintance, or the usual formalities of
introduction, and made a sensation.
Tbe predictions made in these columns
on Monday morning that tho audience
would overflow by the end of the week
was amply fulfilled. It could not have
been otherwise, as everyone who saw the
performance of THE GOLDENS on the
first night told his frieods about and took
hi3 family to it. And this was the histo
ry of the whole week. And the one week’s
engagement was too short. No such suc
cess of an unknown play has been made
in this city since tbe days of Matilda
Herron’s Camille, which many remem
ber. Every one who saw it wag an origi
nal discoverer, and the success grew out
of its own merits. Thus dramatic histo
ry repeats itself at long intervals, and
thus it is established that no good thing
can fail of due recognition.
A Wonderful Young Man.
Americas generally manages to keep up
with tbe procession, no matter what kind
of a parade is going on. North Georgia
having produced a wonderful girl, Miss
Lula Hurst, whose power to moveebaire
and tables has excited the wonder of all
who have seen her, our enterprising little
eity comes forward with a young man
whose powers in the same direction are
nearly as wonderful, and if developed we
doubt not that he would prove a matoh
for Miss Lula. Mr. B. H. Jossey when a
boy manifest'd strong powers in the way
of table tipping, rapping, etc., but as the
use of these powers made him very ner-
his mother forbade his ixercihing
them and he bad' almost forgotten them
until Miss Lula Hurst gave her exhibition
on Monday evening, which he attended.
Tuesday be concluded to make some ex
periments and see whether he still retain
ed his powers. After a few hours of ex
periment he found that he still possessed
them, and in the afternoon he came up to
the Recorder office to show us what he
could do. Placing his hands on the bnck
of a chair, in a few' secounds the chair be
gan to rock backward and move rapidly
toward him. We then sat down in tbe
the chair and he placed the palms of his
hands on the side, when the chair shook
and rocked on the floor. He then took a
pine box, and while we pressed down
upon the box with both hands with all
our force, he placed the palms of his
hands upon tbe top and wo were unable
to keep it from rocking. We then let go
our hold, when the box tipped up one
Side a couple of inches clear of the floor

Mr. Jossey says tho exerciso of this pow
er makes him very nervous and exhausts
him. Tuesday night ho attended Miss
Lula's exhibition and went upon the
stage* to see what effect bis power would
have when combined with or antagonized
with hers. It seemed when both touched
the same article that it could not be con
trolled, flying around os if possessed with
double life. His power would not antag
onize hers, but seemed to be of the same
nature. There seems to be neither mag
netism or electricity about his power, as
those who come in contact with him
when making his experiments feel noth
ing more than theexertion of force. From
this it wonld seem that Miss Lula passess-
es in & great degree the same power
which is exeroised by others in table tip
pings, and that it is no new force.

originated, as the fiunily who occupied it

have been tbe work ot an incendiary.
Tbe building was worth probably $150,
being partially insured. Mechanic Fire
