The Constitution fathers the

Governor of Georgia,” says Editor
Hodge, of the Perry Home Jour

committee to recommend him
Our neighbor, Editor Mercer, of
the Calhoun County Courier, wants
to knock ofT Editor Fleming’s hat
for calling Leary a small place,
when Leary has a 40 gallon artesian
well. That’* right, neighbor, stand
up for your town, even If the town
starves you.
The Supreme Court of Tenues-
see has decided the set creating the
Eairoad Commission of that state
unconstitutional. It. was held that
the legislation creating the com
mission conflicts with the eleventh
article of the State constitution
and with the fourteenth amend
ment of the constitution of the
United States, and is therefore
null and void.

Ot'K POSITION SUSTAINED.
Wo last week spake of the Rail
road Commission as an obstacle in
the way of obtaining increased rail
road facilities in the state, because
capitalists were afraid to invest
their money In property which at
once was placed under t lie control
of three men who were responsible
to no ono for their trust. That this
is the view taken of it hy capitalists
is confirmed by the following ex
tract from an article entitled “Rail
road Building in the South” in the
Baltimore Manufacturing Record :
Notwithstanding the unwise and
unjust railroad legislation in many
of the Southern sutesgditring the
last few years, and the consequent
fear that other states might enact
similar arbitrary laws, the outlook
for railroad building iu the South
is on the whole very good. In
some of states railroad building
will remain almost stationary until
capitalists who invest in such eu
terprises are permitted to manage
their own property; but iu others,
whore railroads are more highly
appreciated, there wilt be a largo
amount of building done during the
present year. Already work lias
commenced^ on a number of im
portant lines, a* well as on tunny
short banch roads, the completion
of which will require the expendi
ture of many millions of dollars;
whito many others hive been in
corporated , some of wbioli, of course
will probably never lie built, but a
large majority will doubtless be
puebed along as the advance ol the
South demands enlarged transpor
tation facilities. Whether railroad
building has been overdone in oth
er parts of the country or not, it
certainly has not in the South, and
there is s'.ill room iu Mist scoiion
for a great inersase in railroads,
Many parts of the South, enormous,
ly rich in mineral and timber wealth
aro now so devoid of transporta.
lion facilities os to make it impos
sible for them to be developed, but
with the present rush of caoltal to
the Southern states there will soon
come greater ectivlty In railioad
building, and new life will be in
fused into regions that arc practi
cally cut olf from sharing in the
general advance of the material in
terests of the South. The growth
of population, of manufactures and
of agi&ultura will soon demand
lergelyjifcreaeed railroad building
at the South.

ery for driving piling in Mill Creek
was brought down on Tuesday
night, and attract! d considerable
attention.
Between three and lor.r o’clock,
yesterday ntlerrtoon, the holler of
the stationary engine, which was
working the pile driver, exploded,
tearing, the engine all to pieces.
Engineer Sloan was instantly kill
ed, being thrown about fllty Icet
through the air Into the swamp.
His left leg was cut oil at the knee,
and fell about eight feet from his
body ; liis neck and right arm was
broken ; a bilge gash was cut iu his
right shoulder; his back was terri
bly bruised and lacerated, as if
some heavy iron had struck him,
and his body seemed literally broken
up. The poor fellow did not know
what killed him.
The little ten-year-old son of the I
dead man was sitting near tin; en !
gine and was thrown a considera
ble distance, his bead striking some
bard substance, breaking his skull,
and wounding Ids scalp in several
places. Tin: blood oozed from his

somethin * was nnt of order, had
walked hack a short distance and
gotten off the trestle, hence cseap
ed i lie explosion. Dr. Slnndifoi
had (list tied his lioise and s'nr'nl
to where the work was going on,
when llie boiler bnrstod. The doe |
tors went immediately to help the j
wounded. One of them was j
brought lo town on the locomotive
engine, which fortunately was on ]
this aide of the wreck, for medi
cines and other materials to dress
the wounded.
It was a most wonderful tiling,
that anyone within flfty feet of the I
engine escaped. The flat ear on |
which the engine was statio :ed was j
broken in the middle, the broken |
ends resting on the track. A very
large sill which was used in the
work was snapped iu two like n

cd out of the wood and the iron
wrenched from its place. Tbo
boiler and entire engine fell mostly
in one direction—which probably
accounts lor the escape of the
other hands. The buss met the
train at the section and brought
the passengers aud the mail to
Blakely. The track was cleared otf
last night and the train came across
at a lato hour.
The body of the dead man was
brought to town immediately after
he was killed. Mr. n. H. Bucn-
anan had him neatly dressed and
placed in n nice coflln. The corpse
was shipped to Macon this morn
ing.
The physicians went out on the
train this morning to seethe woun
ded. Dr. Duster says the little boy
bad reacted sufficiently lo be moved
to Mscoii. Dr. Will Stand iter was
employed to go with the wounded
boy. The wounded flroman uisa
returned to Macon this morning.
The cause of the acoldent is said to
have been carelessness in the engin
eer. He allowed the water to get
too low in the engine, and then
suddenly turned cold water in it
while under a 120 pound head of
steam.
