might differ with us, as very few
oan see alike as to who was the
best looking young man. We will
let tbe ladies decide.
There will bo pleaching at New

From Tbo Louisville, Ky., Csarier-
Jonrnnl of the 31st of January, 1884,
AN INSUFFERABLE OUTRAGE.
While some manufacturers are
shutting down on account of the
over-production brought about by
a high tariff, ibero are others who
are piling up in tbeir coffers a vast
and continuous revenue, of tbe peo
ple’s money.
Not long ago, a gentleman, con
nected with one of the leading job
bing hardware bouses in the coun
try, went to Mexico to fork a
trade. He returned disgusted and
indignant, having learned, to bis
astonishment, that the manufactur
ers of hardware, In the United
States, can afford to, and make it a
practice to sell tbeir goods to
Mexican wholesale and retail deal
ers, from 40 to 50 per cent, cheaper
than the largest cash jobber in this
country can buy them for. -J n other
words, our mi.nufacturers of hard
ware, who claim that they could
not live were it not for tbo enor
mous protection given them by tbe
government,oan aotually make tbeir
goods and send them to another
country 40 per cent cheaper than
their regular standard prices to the
home trade.
Let tbe consumer In the United
States consider what an outrage is
a tariff that makes this possible.
He must-pay two prices for bis
hardware, m order to shut the for
eign manufacturer from the mar
ket and give the home ' manu
facturer a chance to flourish, Tbe
tax is taken from tbe consumer’s
pocket and goes into that of tbe
manufacturer, not only giving him
a monopoly in bis business but
paying bim thousands of dollars
for which be returns In value
absolutely nothing. And yet this
very mrnufaeturer refuses to sell
his goods to tbo consumer who is
taxed to subsidize him at anything
like the prices at which he supplies
them for foreigners. He can afford.
to sell them In Mexico from 40 to
50 per cent cheaper than he .sells
them here. That larger per'cent
is plainly, then, elear bonne, of
which neither bis factory, work
men nor tbe National Treasury re
ceive one cent.
Tbe gentleman from whom we
get these tacts, is In every way re
sponsible for wbat be says. He
baa been in tbe business for fifteen
years and knows it in all itsbranebss.
