As the duty of fixing the salary of tho Judge of the county court for tho next four years devolves upon us, we have looked somewhat closely into the opera'ions of that court. We find that since the or ganization of the lame, some four years ago, the following amount ol business has been disposed of.to- wit: Civil eases in quarterly court, 413; Civil cases in monthly court, C58; Criminal cases originating in county court, 312; Criminal cases transferred from Superior court, CC. Of this amount of business all the civil cases in the quarterly court ami all tbo criminal cases transferred from the Superior court would necessarily have been tried in the Siipciinr court—a mass of business sulllclcut to Imve kept that court in session for an indefi nite period. And ns tho expenses of the Superior court while in ses sion are three or four times greater than the expenses of the county court for the same number cfdaya, it would seem quite evident that the comity court is a saving ol con siderable money to tho county. We recommend that the salary of tho Judge of the County Court ro- main the same 'ns heretofore, to wn, six hundred dollars per annum. Under n law passed nt tho last session of tho Legislature the funds arisipg from fines and forfeitures in this court aro paid as follows: One half to tho county treasurer, to pay the salary of tbo . Judge, witnesses and other expenses of the court, and the other half to pay insolvent cost. We recommend that our. imme diate representative* to be elected to the next Legislature be request- ed to bnve tire law abovo referred to so amended that tbo whole ol the Rues, forfeitures and other funds arising In Ibis court be applied to tho expenses thereof nnd no part go to any insolvent cost. And that the Judge of the County Court have the necessary notices of In tention to have such amendments offered published as icquired by law. As the finances of the county are county aro certainly among the most important subjects upon which the Grand Jury aro expected to report, we give the following as the result of a very diligent inquiry upon that subject: We find the books ofCounly Com missioners neatly ’ and eleguutly kept nnd the expenditures of the Hoard as shown from the vouohcrs of County Treasurer seem to be Judicious and with a strict regard to economy. Wo And tho books of County Treasurer correct and all his vouch ers properly numbered and in place. But when wo consider the enormous increase in expenditures, and that Ibis term of the court will about exhaust every dollar in the treasury, it be. hooves us to admonish the officers to be n9 economical as circumstan ces will permit in expending the public money, nnd to deprecate the bringing of trivial cases before the courts without sufficient evidence to conviot and that do not add to the majesty of tho law or improve tbs morals of a community. From the foregoing it will be seen that the total expenses of the county have largely increased with in the lust few years. For instance, wc sec that the total for tile year ending April 1st, 1882, wa9 $10,- 293.42; while the total for the year ending April 1st, 1834, was $15,- 107.10. This shows an increase of nearly fifty percent. Alwx, 0.8. 0„ $< C., PROFITABLE POTATOES. Maj. B. F. Brlmberry, in a com munication toiheCu'thbert Appeal, gives the following item in regard to raising, and keeping potatoes that will be found Interesting to farmers, and in which they may possibly find a suggestion that If carried out .will prove profitable to a them: Corn planting being over and the crop growing off nicely, our farmers nru busy finishing up cot- ton planting. The acreage devot ed to cotton in this section will be about the same as last year with an Increased acreage devoted lif corn, potatoes and other feed crops. One of onr most succeesful fanners told me this week that he was then planting some ef the land ho had prepared for cot ton in corn, as be is throughly sat- isfiicd that lie could not make any money growing cotton, and was determined to try the provision s a money crop hereafter. ■ I sold and could sell this season about 400 bushel i eon, and corn is now selling at 8* to 90 cents in our markst. 1 asked this farmer how many bushels of sweet potatoes lie could grow on an acre. Said he did not know for a certainty, never having meas ured them, but was satisfied he could grow from 300 to 400 bueheli. The8oarenow worth $1.25 per bushel in Atlanta, and one bouse there would take 500 bushels st $1 delivered at Wards, yet we stick to cotton when we cannot .get <95 per acre from it, while we could get <100 to <150 per sore front po tatoes. The same is true of other things such as ground peas and other crops. In a conversation with Sir. liickct, who lives near Smithrillo and who moved -there two years ago from Illinois, I learned why we cannot keep Irish nnd sweet potatoes. I said to him that it was no trouble to grow these, that ours was the best pota to section of the country, but we could not keep them through the winter season, lie asked how many of onr neople have cellars to Btorc their important articles ef food awuy. 1 at once saw the trouble was with our people in not )reparing lor the business. A cei- ar among tbo people up north is considered as necessary as a barn, and nearly nil our people with a little labor and expense could pro vide themselves with a cellar in which they could store sad keep potatoes for the whole winter, es- a pccinlly is this trae of Irish p.U- - toes. - Mr. llicket said bo raised and kept Irisit potatoes plenty for his family all winter as well as so'd for planting. We must learn to husband all our resources and be more self-sustaining if we will build up and increase the prosperi ty so dcsirablo among our farmers.
