So yon see your lino of thought readies us of ten here. Memorial day was celebrated here with quite a degree of enthu siasm. ThcDawson College Guards were out in full uumbers, and the ladies in their “labor of love” deco, rated the graves of our (alien Con. federate heroes with spring's most beautiful flowers. The Commercial Department of the college iu this city starts out this week into the business world four“fuU fledged” graduates: Rob ert Bryan, of Dawsou, S. J. Stal lings, ofBrundidge, Ala.,and G. W. Harrell, of Butler, Ua.,a!l prom, ising young men. The aocom- plished and pretty Miss Birdie Mc Nulty as also one of the graduates, in “woman’s sphere,” will illustrate her alma mater in the busy world around her. Success to this uobie young lady. A pretty incident took place at the cemetery on Memorial day, at which time the grave of Dennis Paschal was decorated with flow ers. Tills young man, at the time of bis death, was a student in the college here and a member of the military compnny connected with the college. His fotmer comrades garlanded his last resting place with wreaths of tho prettiest flow ers. This was a most beautiful tribute to loving worth. On last Sunday Capt. B. C. Ad ams’ company look the train for Columbus to be present in that city to witness the military drill under the auspices of the Columbus Guards. The boys left anticipat ing a good time, and they will have it, (or the hospitality of Columbus is proverbial. One ot the institutions in this city that deserves notice is the ho- tel under the management of Mrs. W.H. Allen. “As a travelers home” it has no superior in the Southern States. Meet where you will the traveling public and to a man you will find them most enthusiastic of the treatment they receive at this flrstclass house. Dawson could uot lie without it. J. E. Cox, of the large house of Cox, Hill A Thompson, of Atlanta, put in ids appearance here last Mou- day. Ed is ono ot the best of busi ness men, and as a friend he is hard to excel). The lost we saw of lum ho was wending his way to the de pot to take the tram for Fort Gulun and Cutbbort. He is a “busybody.” Judge J. B. Pilsbury and wife, of your city, were in this place on last Tuesday on a visit to relatives and friends. A sad death took place hero on last Monday from an overdose of laudanum; the wife of Mr. J. H. Turner, who had b^eu suffering fron a severe case "Of neuralgia of the head for some days, in order to relievo her severe pains took an over dose of laudanum, and though herculean efforts were made to save her, yctshediedlnafew hours ajter taking the lose. Pitiable to say, she leaves two little children without a mother's care and lore, and a fond husband to mourn the loss of a de voted wife. W. K. P. JOLLY JOIMPBEETUXE. JoiiNPBEKViLLE, April 28 Our railroad meeting came off in tho Ville according to 'ahnbufibeinent. Delegates all present. Many want to know if.the E.fr. V & O. road would .not have* flone what tho Central proposes to do and lot the road coine through from llawkinsville to Florence. Say they have seen nothing to tho contrary, but If wc oau get the road to Lumpkin the county will see that she goes through to the river. The little corn and cotton is on a stand still, owing to the cool damp weather. The cotton, when up, stands very One. Chopping will commeiicc next week. The pros* peels for a floe oat crop is very flattering at this time. Mr. S. P. Kimbrough and lady, have been visiting in Dawson for several weeks, r«tAroed Tuesday. Mavor. n t\ vuru luwttiu^ nui. Messrs. Janes and l»die«, of’Dawson, at MACOS I’OUSTY. Bolden ville, April 28.—Miss Ada Williams, who has been off visiting, lias again added her charms to tlio society of Boldcnvdle. Somebody's glad. Mr. W. H. McKenzie, oflhe firm of H. C. A W. H. McKenzie, of near Montezuma, paid Boldcnvillo a briof visit yestordsy. Mr. Alonzo Jones, of Marshal- ville, was visiting around the Ville Sunday. Messrs R. H. Sutton and Ed. English, wbo have been at Moore’s Commercial University in Atlunta, have returned home. They are good hoys and apt scholars, conse quently the president granted them “sheepskins,” as they term it, and they are now fully qualified for a commercial life. They speak very complimentary of Moore’s Univer sity. Though generally the average oat crop of this vioinity is-but or dinary, Macou coiiqty can boast of the earliest oats of the season. Air. A. W. Norris, of near this place, has oats that were sown on the 14th of February, which were fully developed two weeks ago, aud will probably bo ripe in a few days. Who can beat it? As tiic numerous railroads are traversing the country, and various other branches of enterprise are dawning to the South, the farmers of Alacon county have felt it their indispensable duty to sustain their enterprises, and they now carry twe rows instead of one. Formerly the single plow stock was used only, but the double stock Is used extensively now, and with great satisfaction, and those lvbo uro more eager for success have mount ed the “sulky,” and even our do creplt farmers, wbo have long since retired to the shade, take an active part in at the plow, (see, they can ride,) and as they arrange their horses to the sulky, and assume their comfortable attitude, with reins in band and umbrella hoisted, they orack their whips and go off dowii tho row singing “a sulky evermore.” It is getting time that some im provements were being made for the farmer, for ns the great iudus- tries of the North, South and the united world increase, the re sponsibilities of tho farmer do like wise enhance. We long to hall tile day when plows will bo drawn by •team; we long to sec the day when the steam engine will no longer practice the uucomlortable and ino- notonous riding of the rail, but will gallop across the Held with plows attached to them. That’s what wc want to see; we do. W. 0. ing to building railroads and hope that tho next representative may be one that can condescend to treat us with respect while among us. We now regard ths Preston and Smitbvilto road as a fixture. Tfit officers of the road are all husiuess men and they certainly mean bust- ness. Oat orops improving. Corn crops generally small, but looking well. Married, near Red Hill, Stewart county, on Snnday,'20th mst., Mr. John Gleeu and Atiss Mariano Bartee.
