The Picnic Season.
Wednesday the picnic season was for
mally opened by a happy wagon load of
young ladies going out lo Black’s mill for
a frolic of their own. without the aid or
intervention of tlio sterner sex. Conse

by the young ladies will ever be a myste

From Mr. J. W. Sheffield, one of tho

two phyniciaos were- called to attend him.
Everything iu the way" of instruments,

A Tribute to tb® “Solicitor.'*
Am the Dawson College Guards were
inarching to tho depot in Dawson tho
other day. preparatory to going to Co
lumbus, they mot Solicitor Pilsbnry, of
Beco&dxr, when Captain Adams halted
the company and ordered them to pre
sent arms. He explained that Mr. Pils-
bury was a vetoran in the late war, and
distinguished himself on several occa
sions, for which ho wished tbe company
to do him honor. Mr. Pilsbnry w«a very
muob embarrassed, but managed to ex
press his gratitude fer the honor i.bown
him in*a few well chosen words. After
his remarks the Guards gave three cheers
and a tiger for tho Solicitoi and went on
their way. • * '

Most of the ladies havo been expressing
u great admiration for the new stylo white

being they were too high.
, If you havo kept up with the news of
the Recorder and Republican you will
at once rpmtmbtr that Thornton Wheat-
ley has Goon telling you that ho would
have^ handsome lino of these goods in
stock ln<4f few day* at prices from J to £
less than any yet offered in the city. He
has just opened them up and is very rap
idly substantiating bis statement. After
gazing upon the beauty of them and then
finding out the loW prices at which they
are bsing sold, those who have unfortu
nately fallen vlotims to tho high prices
imposed on them elsewhete gaze with
wonder and t a*fc^i«bu:ent and go home
with an Aching heart feeling and medita
ting thAt “for lote prices, good goods, and
polite Attention ; Wheatley's it certainly
tho place to go."
In addition to the above goods he is
ah owing tho prettiest line of gloves and
mitts, in bottrtfale and silk, ever offered
to the tipfi#, and at prifity that uoIe{ tbu
purchaser ask ‘'how can you sell them so
cheap?” The mystery is easily solved:
They are bought from parties who (like
himself) ara very anxious to sell them to
-parties from' whom the c&th can ba ob

The Haas Stopped
Yesterday, the first of May, we hauled
in our buss and will ran it no more, with
out special contract, like any other vehiclo
we have in our stable. We have been
running the buss more for accommoda
tion than money, for it’s precious little
money we ever got from it. We managed
lo get along until tho council saw fit ta
levy a tax ou that part of the business sep
arately, and we havo concluded it was
time to shut down, so wenro now offer
ing the buss for sale or hire. We think
the city needs a buss, and some philan
thropic gentleman ought to run it. We
are ready to sell, end will do so for threo
hundred dollars less first cost, and v».!!
be glad to get rid of it with that loss. The
buss is as good as now, aud fine enough
for any city, North or 8outb.
