Dawson, May 13.—Tbiougli tliv
Kecohukr attention is asked to tbc
feasibility of to constructing tbe
street intersecting tho northern
portion of tbe city of Dawson, and
runuing cast and west, that it may
open up a more direct route to that
portion of tbe city, so that persons
trbo are living in tb.' neighborhood
of tbc Roberts placo may be saved
tbc inconvenience of going a mile
out of tbeir way to reach tho city,
and, besides, property holders who
pay their proportion of tho city
taxes aro directly interested in this
matter, which has become an ur
gent one wilii them. No giont an
amount of expenses need be in
curred, as but little grading is to
be done, A bridge would have to
be constructed over middle Chicka-
sawlinfchec creek, which would cost
but little to the city. We respect
fully bring this matter before the
city fathers of Dawson, ns we have
been requested to do so.
Dawson lias a most pleasant re
sort now for those who in the sultry
summer months like a plate of ice
cream or a drink of iced lemonade.
O. I. Chambers lias fitted up n nosy
little tent upon a side street near
his confectionery, which is throng
ed with lads, and lassies of tills de
lightful city every afternoon. Ira
is one of our most sterling young
men and deserves success.

We tell the friends of the Recor-
her, and they arc legion in this
section, to make themselves at
home in tho Recorder oDlco when
they visit Amcricus, “ono of the
gems of Southwest Uoorgiu.” Wo
wish them to see the admirable ar
rangements eonnee.ed witli tho pa>
per that so many read and appre
ciate here and elsewhere.

I’arks will be delighted to know
that this gentleman is now often
seen upon our streets, though ho is
still on his crulclics. His long ah-
ayncc from the active pursuits of
life has been sorely felt by many
of us.
Tho many friends of Mr. and
Mrs. Morrell Callaway here extend
to each of them tbulr warmest sym
pathies in tbclossoftbeirdnugktcr,

Prominently spoken of here for
the Legislature is Col. T. II. Pick
ett. He is one of our most solid
men, and stands high in his pro
fession as a lawyer. Almost every
one that your reporter meets wants
Tom Pickett to represent Terrell
in the next Legislature. Let him
say the word and he will go.
The centennial celebration of tiie
Methodist Sunday school here on
last Sunday was a decided success.
The recitation of one of the scholars,
Miss Helen Parks, was admirably-
done. The speeches of Cols. Hen
derson and Wimberly gave satis
faction, but the crowning beauty
of the whole was in the collection
for destitute places without Sun
day schools, which was a large one.
Jo Scott, of your <ity,“took in"
this place last Tuesday. Brimful)
of business, he was on tho “ran”
all the time. The Bank of Amorb
er, ennnot make more than half a
crop. W. M. Dozier, W. J. Jor
dan and W. Moore have some fine
oats, yet far below their expecta
tion when planting and fertilizing
so heavily'. Tbc corn crops which
have had an unhealthy color from
unfavorable weather, arc rapidly
assuming n healthful green nnd now
promises well. The cotton crop is
also looking unusually well under
the very favorable weather which
has prevailed for the past two or
three weeks nnd chopping is far
advniccd. The bulk of the crop will
be chopped this week. With day la
bor in abundance, lino wentber,tho
'workingfnrmers will soon linve their
crops beyond tbe injuries usual
from grass nnd weeds; all tilings
considered, tbc present outlook for-
farmers is cncouruging.
Tlie fine weather lias dried off
the creeks, swamps and made Ash
ing a pleasant sport for the "always-
got-time-enough” fishermen; tho
banks ol the creeks nre well shaded
and furnish just enough mosquitoes
to keep ono from going to sleep
and losing a nibble. Some of the
llshcrmcn make tho sport proflta-
hie. Mr. Joe Oliver, near Cotton
Hill, with bis sons in one night,
with set hooks, caught about forty
pounds of channel cat, some of
which wero very large and fine.

Miss Willie Dozier is off on a
pleasure trip through Middle and
Eastern (leorg'la, visiting relatives
and friends, nnd will take in tbe
beautiful sen lionrd city of Savan

Prof. E. A. Reese's school at
Ucorgclown is rapidly growing.
Prof. R. is tbe right man in tbo
school room. Miss Emma Jordan
will close tlie first term of her
school on tbe 22nd inst. with an ex
hibition nt night, to which all are
Invited. I have not seen the pro
gramme, but am assured that some
thing ricli is in store lor those who
attend at Morris Station on that
night.
Owing to tho busy season among

JoiiNPRttviLLE, Slay 12.—We
made a flying visit to.DaVson to
day. Wo saw but little or nothiog
doing with tho merchants. Whit
tling, marbles add checkers receive
all the spare time. W. A. Janes
bad Just returned from the great
sale at Sheffield, Ala., and was the
ccntor of uttrnoti'on, and 1 know
was asked the same questions at
least a thousand timos before nine
o'clock this morning.
We found the crops on the road
small, bnt in good order. Every
body through planting and have
started to chopping. Tho corn nil
small, we think for the middle of
May. The oat prospect Is very
good; the rain on Tliuvday last im
proved them considerably, and
with one more godd rain the last
of this or the first of next week
they will be safe and will be more
than an average crop. A few have
put in a few potato slips and all
hands will be ready when it rains
again.
Old Charlie, our good old family
horse for the past 10 years, it now
lying at the point of death and no
hopes of bis recovery. He's a
horse, 'tis true, and, oh! howss4.it
is for some of us to see him die.
We always felt safe behind old
Charlie. Well (lone, thou good
and faithful servant.
We aro glad to report Mr. Kim
brough Improving slowly, and it is
the wish of all that he will soon be
out again. Dr. W. C. Paschal and
lady, of Dawson, are visiting him
this week.
Mr. Tom Simmons end lady, of

in the ville.
Dr. Copeland and lady speut to

As a contrast in the line of Presi
dents Arthur is perfect. He is the
first and probably the last of his
kind. Yon can turn from Jeffer
son in bis long, worsted etocklags
and gray homespun suit, receiving
Mr. Merry, tho British Minister, to
Arthur in the latest personification
of the fashion plsto, and muse on
the superior evolution in Presi
dents. “When I seo magnificent
dandies yawning out of White’s"
says Thaokeray, “oir caracoeing In
in the park bn shining chargers, I
like to think that Brnmmell was
the greatest of them all, and that
Itrnmmcll's father was a footman.”
So when* you read of the- dspdifled
splendor, tho extra bath tubs,
dressing rooms and the superflui
ties of the Arthurian episode you,
too, liko to think that the finical
being requiring so much elegance
was never the choice oi the country
never could be; that tbe,people
with good-natured forbearance
wait for bis exit (him P 'ttrtf
where he has been chiefly conspic
uous by his sumptuous dresrl.g
and where, too, .like the revlrsl
of an old sequenoe in former stage
management; after a tragedy eame
tbe farce—or the Arthurian admin
istration.
