Frull Cnllure In BonUiwratern Georgia.
Southern World.
A Lout four months ago the writer
visited and described the luxuriant
pear orchards and vineyards in the
vicinity of Thomasvillc, which have
so gristly enriched their owners,
More recently he has continued his
investigations a. other points, nolu.
lily, Sniithvillc, Butler, Genera and
Hawkinsvilte.
The result of these observations
i is the profound conviction that no
i other description of husbandry will
compare in the value and certainty
of its returns with the rearing of
fruit and the manufacture of wine
for market.
Gentlemen of unquestioned rclia.
bllity who cultivate groves of or-
angesin Fioiidaaud Lc Conte pears
in Georgia, emphatically affirm that
the latter are more prolltable, cer
tain, and very much less expensive
than the golden fruit of the “Pen.
insular State."
It was for tills reason that Mr.
W. W. Thompson, who is an c.\.
tensive orange grower in Florida,
has of late ycurs turned his alien,
tion exclusively to the opening of
pear orchards, and vinevards in
Southwestern Georgia.
Tbo wrltera few days ago visited
his famous “Lo Conte Nursery” in
the environsoi Smithville.Ga.,nnd
saw this remarkable pear and other
fruit trees in their greatest per
fection.
On au area of 22 acres costing
$30 peracre, Mr. Thompson, who
began operations in 1880, lias 1,700
flourishing I.s Conte pear trees,
200 of the "Keifer” variety, and
100 -‘Orcntals.”
] The "I.e Contes" tire cone-like
aud beautiful in form and bloomed
j for the first time the present sea-
I son. They will average a yield of
j tier, bushels to each tree next year.
This variety of (tear will gener
ally bear the fifth year from the
cutting, and four years after put
ting out the rooted young trees of
one year’s growth.
The cuttings should be 12 to 15
inches in length, and may be iuserted
from September to January about
live inches apart, in trenches lflincli-
cs deep, with about three iuchcs of
well rotted stable or cowpcn manure
at the bottom and then filled in
with surface soil, the rich scrap
ings of fence corners, or woods’
cailh.
Stick the cuttings straight down
so deep that only about two or
three inches will protrude above
ground.
In dry seasons they should be
watered und the soil kept loose and
sell cultivated. The proportion
of -‘slips” that will “catch” and
grow olT varies with the vicissitudes
of tho seasons. One fourth may
be considered a fair average. Tbo
writer put out 3G cuttings In his
garden in January, and everyone of
them budded and appeared to be
! doing well. Hut the cold winds
[ and frosts of April nippeil all save
j two or three. Those that can ho
| relied upon to live may be kuown
; by the pinkish tinge of tho new
; leaves, lu extraordinarily favora
ble seasons over 50 per cent hare
boon known to stand. They will
grow upon sandy or stiff soil, and
may bo cultivated with success ns
far North as New England. No
clearly deflueil case of blight has
ever been discovered in a Lc Conto
pear orchard North or South, and
llie demand lor young trees is con
stantly increasing in every section
of the Union and even in t.ie Cana
das.
Mr. Thompson has put out the
present season 500,000 Lc Come
cuttings and 2,500 Kcifcrs.
The price of rootlets of a year's
growth is $20 and upwards, accord
ing to size, |>or hundred.
Ife is waking another nursery
and orchard at the distance of a
Conte pears, a goodly number of
year old rootlets, and thousands of
nuttings that will he ready for
market next year.
There arc muny other pear or
chards in the same vicinity and
the people of that section will soon
reap a rich harvest from the sale
of this luscious fruit.
At Uutlor wn had tho pleasure of
meeting Mr. J. K. llospess, who
unites in his person n happy com
bination ol the religious journalist,
larmor and Iruit and stock raiser.
Mr. K. informed the writer that
hia peach orchard numbered 4,600
trees, 3,000 of which arc now in
full bearing nnil loaded witli fruit
In addition lie has 700 LeConte
pear trees 11 is difficult to decide
whether he is most enthmed with
the success of his journal, the Gos
pel Messenger, which boasts a cir
culation of 4,500 and is tho organ
of the Primitive Baptists in the en
tire South, or the wonderful suc
cess of his l'ruit operations. His
testimony is very pointed ns tu tbo
superior profits or that branch of
agricultural industry.
R. A. Paschal, of Geneva, is also
a striking illKtslration of the same
truth, albeit he gives honey, poul
try and bntirr a place also in tho
picture.
He allowed the writer no less
than twenty varieties of pigeons nil
occupying the snmo cote, and yet
cacti species preserved intact. His
plan is to mate them nt the proper
time himself, and after couflning
the pnir for a day or two turn them
loose again. Iu every instance
they prove faithful to the conjugal
relation, and strange to relate their
marital rights arc respected by the
entire community ot birds. There
is absolutely no crossing of breeds
but every couple rears its own
family without strife or bickering.
This affords a salutary lesson to
the bipeds of tho human race.
Mr. Paschal derives a handsome
rercuuo from his bees.
Last year the colonies averaged
one hundred pounds each of press
ed honey which was eagerly sought
alter in the market. By nil inge
nious revolving machine the liquid
honey is extracted, leaving the
comb intact and ready to be refilled
again bytbeindustrious little creat
ures. Tho operation is repeated
more than once during the season
with the ahovo result.
At this time Mr. Paschal has 55
hives and expects to sell over 5,.
000 pounds of honey. All of the
work is done by him end one addi
tional hand, who also cultivates the
orchard and assists in the (arm.
Hero wore to be seen also 700
choice LeContc pear trees, n flour
ishing vinoyard loaded with grapes
and an orchard of peaches and
plums.
But the pride and pet of tho own
er was his bcnl of seven Jerseys of
the finest and most celebrated
atrains. These are of great value
and the butter ot the finest quality.
Tho vineyard of Mr. Starowaki nt
Hawklnsvillo is exceedingly pro
ductive and his Concord andScup-
pernong wines are in great teqnest.
The united testimony of tho wine
growers of Georgia is that the
grape crop is the most certain of all
others in this latitude, audjtlic day
is not distant when it will become
one ol tho most important as it
already is, profitable industries of
the Commonwealth. U. H. J.

A little book of political recol
lections, just published in Ken
tucky, contributes a new story of
Pres'iiient Lincoln, which is worth
quoting l-ecause of its apparent
applicability to a recent conspicu
ous volte-face in our own poli
ties, and possibly, also, to the fn-
lure development of the saute in
cident. To a |ioIitieal opponent
who had taunted Lincoln with his
youth, he replied: “Live long or
die young, I would rather die
now Llmi), like tho gentleman,
change my politics, aud, simultan
eously with the change, receive an
ollico worth $3,00(1 per year, and
titen have to erect a lightning rod
over my house to protect n guilty
conscience from an offended God."

The owner was called for, and a
strapping fellow about 30 yoars of
ago approached. He was attired
In the Turkish costainc, consisting
of a short Jacket, bine vest embroid
ered and covered with bell-buttons,
baggy breeches, yellow sash, goat
skin boots, and red fez; his hair
was short, (ace dark, with bright,
gleaming eyes and a fierce mons-
taolu-. He was above the medium
size, and withal n pleasant-looking
fellow.
“Now, nty aon,” said tho Cap

horse?"
Making a salaam, tho Kurd an
swered:
“Master, If thy servant hath
found favor in thine eyes, thou
shall have the horse for 200 se
quins."
“O Father of the Faithful, hear
tbo thief!” shouUd the old fellow
with the swivel neck. “Two hun
dred sequins for the brute, when I
will sell my beautiful beast (or 100."
“You nsk too much, my son,”
said the Captain.
“Thou seost, O Frangistani, that
my horse is swift as au arrow from
the bow, and that he sprlngetli like
a jackal. See his loins; they are in
strength ss the lion.”
“I see all these things, O child
of tho faithlul, but yet thou askest
too much.”
“Well, please God, thou wlltbuy

“N.iw may dogs defile thy grave,
thou robber!” shouted the fellow
who sported the blue gabardine
and yellow slippers. “Wouldst
thou client the stranger within onr
gates, when for eighty sequins he
cau buy my beast, the prido of Bns-
sora, instead of mounting thy old
camel, which is fit for nothing but
lepers to ride?"
“1 will count down in thine
hand twenty sequins with the Sul
tana of Frangistani thereon for thy
horse.” said the Captain.
“What hath thy servant do-ie to
thee, O master, that Inou should thus
revile him? Say eighty and we
shall rejoice.’■’
“No; I will give thee twenty."
“Fiftv sequins and he is thine.”
“No.”
“lte is of the children Arahy,

“Twenty, or we shall dopnrt In

“In Allah’s name, say thirty."
“No.”
“Well, thou sbalt have him for
twenty; but ho kind to Solim, for
he Is a good horse, and loves not
beating.”
An extraordinary sceuo took
place a few days since at tho Leek
Cemetery, tu England, on the oc

farmer. On arriving at tho grave,
the officiating clergyman, the Rev.
W. Boris lord, viear of St. Luke’s

feet would not point to the east

told him that tho gravo was in a
