Filty thousand ffoUaf* lias been
appropriated by tho*mauugcr8 of
the New Orleans Colton Kxposi-
tion for the purpose of allowing
colored men to make a special ex
hibit of their progress in the arts,
manufactures and other forms of
industry.
The. Atlanta Constitution came
out in a new dress last Tuesday,
and is now ns handsome ns it is
good. The Constitution is n live,
progressive paper, and is doing a
great work lor Georgia. In laet,
it is n little too progressive, for
when it goes ns lar us it can in one
direction, rathur than stand still it
will start oil on on opposite lack
and go as far the other way. It
will never dia from rust—its only
danger lies in u hoi box.

In a lew days the Republicans
will meet in national convention
to nominate a candidate for presi
dent. Arthur, Blaine and Slier-

ion that neither of the prominent
candidates will bo nominated. It
ought to make little difference to
the people of the United States
who is nominated; they ought to
know that whoever lie is lie will
carry out the principles of tlio par
ty. The record of the Hcpuiiliean
party lor the past fifteen years
ought to be enough to insure the
defeat of tlm nominee, il lie were
the purest man on earth.

Tom Burney, of the Macon Tele
graph, and the writer were sitting
on the verandah of the Fnrnutn
House at Dawson, a few evenings
ago, when the question of farm la
bor came up for dismission—it was
not. much of a discussion, for both
parties agreed as to the necessity
ol something being done to relieve
the planters from the tyranny ol
negro labor. Toni told of how one
farmer in Jasper county solved the
problem. The fanner had n large
lield of oats to cut and the negroes
of the neighborhood forimff a soi l
of syndicate and struck for high
wages. To accede to their demands
was to lose all the prollts on the
oats, and as the Held was tolerably
level anil free from Mumps the
farmer bought him a reaper and cut
Ilia oats, leaving the high-priced
negro lalrorcrs to look over the
fence ami see their work performed
liy a machine at less than one-third
the price they asked. After the
lurmcr got his own oats cut lie
turned ill and cut those of his neigh
bors, thus releiving them from the
necessity of paying the iiigh prices
asked by the laborers and at the
same time helping him to pay for
liis machine. There is a little moral
ill tills story which our farmer
readers can deduce lor themselves
at their leisure.
