control. It means not only present
but future progrcaa—the inaugura
tion of an enterpriae that will not •
only enable A mcricus to retain iu
eommaniling position as the eom-
incrcinl capital of Southwest Geor
gia, but place it among the chief
markets of the State, This is no
bombast, but solid truth, which can
bo proven. Suoh inducements
ought to bo suffioieut to make
every business man in Amcricus
respond liberally, promptly and
cheerfully to the cn!l for subscrip
tions.
Now let us look nt the other side, j
Suppose Amcricus fails to promptly j
raise tlie money to build its pro-1
portion of the road? A railroad ’
will in less than a year be built j
Iroin Columbus to Albany, cutting
olf tho trade Irom Webster county
which Amcricus now enjoys. The
road would now be under headway
were it not tbnt the people along a
large portion of the line arc now
interested in securing the A mal l
eus, Preston and Lumpkin road.
Let Amel'icus once drop this rond
anti the people of Webster und
Stewart counties will at ouce join
hands with Columbus and Albany
to build that road. The people of
those counties arc determined to
have a road, and they will Imre it.
Some ol our people laughed at the
idea of the people of Schley and
Marion building a road without
outside nid, but the mat) is being
built, and it is going to injure the
trade of Amcricus unless the
Atnericus and Lumpkin road is
built. If Amcricus allows rail
roads to be built around it, it will
not be long before its trade will be
cut olf and the life sapped out of
our city.
We do not know that any argu
ment is necessary to induce our
people to promptly trnko up the
sum necessary, but it can do no
kirm to givo them a plain state
ment of the enso, as there are
always a few in every city
who do not at ouce realize the im
portance of such public enterprises
and arc inclined to think that ns
Amerieus has prospered heretofore
it must necessarily continue to
prosper.
