Tho pulse of tho people here beats almost to a man in one di rection, and that is for u modifica tion of tho powers of the Railroad Commission. Major U. U. MGR III MOULTRIE. t Uat. «a>*af THE FOURTH IX II00LV. Boi.knville, July 6 As tho 4th of July is sot apart by tho “rmau- cipuled” to celebrate in thu way of recuperations in tho rural dis tricts, your correspondent, in com pany with Messrs. E. B. Lewis, J. YV. McKenzie, Joe YVilson, Louis Lippmun, M. I/. Patrick and others, by tho timo tho “king of day” be gan rising in tbo East, launched lorllt from -Montezuma cn route to tbe annual picnic in the 2d district of Dooly, ou Little river, well known as thu “Cyclono Bathecue.” Thu duy was refulgent, tbe balmy air exhilarating and the elberiul songsters sent strains of melody to make pleasant the journey. But nothing could surpass thu pictur esque loveliness, which would now and then hurst forth upon the gaze of the traveler, and the novel scen eries of the undulating landscapes, extension farms of fine corn, splen did cotton nnd excellent grass. About ten o'clock our journey became monotonous, but our di lemma was soon relieved by tbe merry greetings of the melodious “airs” from tbe instruments which had been procured to make music lor tbe occasion. This gave vent to us, approaching our randsome, which seem to be the clysiutu of twelve or fifteen hundred people. Tltero we found an extensive stage Moultrie, Juno 29.—Col. Pat terson will have hie angino running in three weeks. He will runasaw, gin anil grist mill. YVo will then ccaso from our mill-going troubles, don't you know? At preseat we are dependent ou Jno. Fincher’s, five miles above here, and for the greater part of tbo year nearly that distance from water, steam, or oth er motive powor. In case John don’t grind wo fall hack oh Till man, 8 miles south, which manages to run every day in the year but 365, excepting leap year, when tho oir days amount to 366. Both the mills resemble the famous “mills ot tbe Gods” in that they grind slow ly, though there is nothing email about tlio product oxoopt the qfian- tity. Once a facetious boy went to mill to ono of those: “YVhy, great jemini gosh, Mr. Miller, I kin cat the homily as fast as yerdarned olo mill kin grind it.” “Yes, but how long could you hold out?” ask ed tho miller. “Till I starved to death, hy granny.” One other alternative is Wheeler Norman’s, 9 miles, nnd ho has only certain days of the week to grind on. Rains continuous, and whlrli- gusts occasionally have driven tbe last semblance of snnsbina during the past two weeks into hopeless obscurity. Every fellow citizen you meet is in pursuit of “later vines.” Crops are looking oxcecd- ly well, except poor king cotton. Aquarius has entered into a league with Gen. Green and I fear that King Cotton’s accouterments will rust cro the battle isovor. Thero Is good deal of talk among our people in regard to a greator diversification of crops. More in terest is being manifested iu the caro of orofaard, garden and poultry yard. Beekeeping is attracting somo attention, and experiments arc meeting with flattering success. Five years ago I knew of plenty of families in this county who Had never seen a headed cabbago grow ing. Some who had never been to town, didn't know how a cabbage head looked. Now everybody has a garden, and I have seen as fine cabbago grown here during the present year as I aver saw any where. I riso to enquire if tlio Macon Air Line railroad ts not appropri ately named? Seems to mo that it is built altogether iu air, and that the grading, ties, traok, rolling stoek and all is ofthe same ethereal material. Tho surveyed routes aro alone of tlio earth, earthly. Blackberries are selling at $1 per bushel. Corn is worth $1.10 to $1.25, whero it can be bad; ba con sells at 14 to 17 cents per pound; beef 4 to 5; mutton $2 each, and chickens and eggs 15 to 25, and 10 to 15, respectively. YV. K. P. mentions the bold chir- ogruphy which has become the pre vailing style utnong our lady writ ers. lie might also add that it is the universal fashion among male writers of these latter days. In my humble opinion the moderu standards of penmanship as adopt ed by school boards and taught in our schools is at fault.
