Gulteau declared, Id bis wild
vehement way, that all who had a
hand In hie condemnation for “re-
.moving” President Garfield would
lie accursed. Nobody is obliged
to believe that the anathema of this
lunatic—nicked indeed) but crazy
—bad any special inspiration; but
•here has been a queer coincidence
of faot'ih the whole business. Mis
fortune swiftly befell quite a num
ber of persons who bad anything
to do with having the insane assas
sin hanged. The dishonorable con
clusion of General Swaim’s mili
tary career has made this a Iresh
topic. He came under the baleful
shadow of Guiteau’s curse. We
are specifically Informed that one
of the Jurors, Michael Hbeeman, is
now in an asylum insane; another,
Heinlein, is dead; the third, Hobbs,
has lost his wife; another is re
ported as suffering from a combi
nation of mental and physical
troubles. Of the officers of the
court, Marshal Henry has suffered
decapitation; one of the deputies,
tfiie Tall, who had charge of Gui-
teau, has since died. Deputy Mar
shal Williams was also decapitated.
Perry Carson and James Ledyard
have lost their official positions, as
also District Attorney Corkhill.
Of the friends of GarQeld, who
we;re, of course, anxious to see bis
murderer punished, only one,,
Superintendent Rockwell, remains
undisturbed in his position. Dr. ,
Noble Young, whoso inexpert med- I
leal testimony did more than any- I
thing else to sway the jury's ver
dict, is dead. Guitcau may have
shot a random arrow and yet hit j
the mark accidentally, when invok
ing malediction upon his immediate
persecutors. Say what we will,
and think what wo will about that
curse, it has nevertheless bad
strange fulllllment in numerous
cases.—Augusta Chronicle.
A cape Breton man last spring
shipped five barrels of eggs packed
in hay for Boston ou the slow
sailing ship St. Saphirc. When lie
reached port he found that the hay
on the under part of the barrels bad
become so heated that half the
eggs were cooked. The remaining
half batched out and subsisted for
two months on the roasted eggs.
They wore almost ready lor the
market when they were released
from their prison.
