■ ‘ Among the Cowboys.
Theodore Roosevelt was found
at his home in Madison avenue on
Saturday by a Xew Vork Tribune
reporter, but was disinclined to
talk about the political situation,
lie said: “I am perfectly willing
to tell you what I know nltout life
in the West. I have just returned
from my cattle ranch, in extreme
western Dakota, and shall start
back again next Monday, taking
with Me two Maine men, who wcro
my companions in several shooting
trips on snow-shoes in the Xortli
woods. 1 like the West, and I like
ranching life. On my last trip I
.was just three weeks on my ranch,
and.juaA.twenty-onc days, of »lx-
teen hours each, in the saddle,
either after cattle—taking part in
the ‘round-up,’ or hunting. I never
kill for the mere sport, but make
some use of the game. The last
buffalo I shot was an old bull. I .
have been collecting a lot of heads j
with which to decorate the hall of I
ipjnoOnntry home. I have precious
little sympathy for Anglomania,
and have always admired a thor
oughly Ameiican sport like hunting
of the large guincot the West, with j
a Winchester or Sharp’s rille, on ,
the back of one of the tough cay- !
uses or bronchos, it would elec-
trij$ some of my friends who hnve
secured me of representing the kid-
gloved clement in politics if they
could sec me galloping over the
plains, day in and day out, clad in
u buckskin suit and leather ebapa-
rajos, with a big sombrero on my
head. For good healthy exercise
T would strongly recommend some
of our gilded youth to go West
and try a short course of riding
'bucking’ ponies and assist at the
branding of a lot ot Texas steers.
‘•The cowboys nro a inucb mis
represented class of people. It is
a populai impression that when
one goes among them lie must be
prepared to 9hoot. Rut this is a
t'ulse idea-. I have taken part witli
them in the ‘rounding-up,’ hnve
eaten, slept, hunted, and herded
cattle with them, and have never
had any difllculty. If you choose
