out for his arrest. While on hi.
way Wednesday to make other ar
rant* Marshal Cash requested
Sheriff Kiggin, ot Bronwood, lo
arrest Brown and have him ready
hy the time lie returned to llron-
wood. This, It seems, was done and
Brown placed in jail.
On Thursday morning the jailer
and Marshal J. O. Potter carried
Brown his breakfast and tool; nil
the handculls. He then locked the
door and went oil' lo a baseball
match. Heturninginnhoulan hour
lie found Brown had broken jail
and escaped. Potter tlien hurried
to Brown’s house, about a half mile
dislant, and saw Brown standing at
the gate talking to a little girl,
hut on seeing the marshal approach
ing ran off. The marshal pursued,
and believing that he was about to
lose his prisoner, tired into the air
for the purpose ol frightening him.
Brown did not stop, and the mar-
shal then lired at Brown, the lull!
striking him in the leg. Tlte negro
ran about four hundred yards,
when the marshal llrcd again, witli!
better aim. The negro then darted
into the woods and the marshal re
turned to town for assistance.
When they returned they found
the negro dead in the woods.
The coroner held an inquest
over tile body and rendered a ver-
diet to the cil'ect that Brown came
to his death from a gunshot wound,
and supposnblv at the hands of J.
O. Potter. It is thought that Pot- j
ter has gono away.
