Politicians here, says a Washing- j
ton special to the Chicago Times,
arc speculating as to the probable j
uourscior Grant and Gonkling in ,
the emtihg campaign, and in this i
connection it may be interesting to {
make public the (act that during ;
the General’s last visit to Washing
ton .ho called upon Mr. Blaine, and ,
the tiro-gentlemen were closeted j
together for over two hours. Of j
course the results of that interview |
can only be authoritatively an
nounced by a statement from cith
er of the parties present. This has
not tee».done,.yot intimate friends
/tffecifu b«rerssjr that an amicable
Umdenitandlng was arrived at so Or
as Grant was concerned, and that
he will take part when the cam
paign fairly opens in New York.
Mr. Conkling has absolutely re

Blaine or bis canvass. He is re-

their enmities to more than coun

the present instance Lord Roscoc

not affect his knifing Blaine.
Conkling is rather inclined to favor
.Batter’s eandldaoy. They are
men who think alike on many ques

therefore, that before the campaign
is over Conkling will give utterance

The Alabama Western railroad
is a very important one in the links
of the Georgia Central, and is a
profitable ono as well. The An-
gneta Chronicle states that the
board of directors did not at first
see the value of the purchase when
it was made, and the late Col. Wad-
ley proposed to take the road in liis
own hands. In speaking of the
transaction, ft says;
“When the Into Wm M Wndley
bought the Alabama Western rail
road for the Central he drew a
check in his own name on Moses
Taylor, of Now York, for $2,500,-
000, tho price of the same. The
hank in New York in its surprise
sent a messenger to Taylor to
know if ho would pay it. He re
plied yes, but tho bank officers still
iucrcdulous wont in person. The
money was hauled away in cart-
tram of specie. For mouths Mr.
Taylor carried for this vast loan
nothing but Mr. Wadley’s note,
requiring no other security. It ran
on this way for months. The mat
ter illustrates the breadth of Mr.
Wadley’s transactions and his solid
character for integrity."

he answered: “Well, 1 should say
so; many’s the time I’ve brought
