A "DUDE” CLOTHING-HOUSE. Am t Inside View of n dwell Haber* dasher? In lew York. (New York Cor. Atlanta Constitution.] We worship that which is expensive. I was, i«blinded of this forcibly by a firm wUAillUMliMLlUPw M thfi r top rank in its own particular line by un* blushingly afid shamelessly-overclmrK- ing for everything they sell. They de scribe themselves as “ haberdashers," add,, keep.-.what is known in the vulgar parlance of the day as a “gents' funiiHhing*goods'’ store. They have a superb establishment. It is the size of two stores; is fitted in polished mahog any from floor to ceiling, and filled with a small army of snobbish clerks. A page in livery .opens the door for those who inferij .ftpfl they never allow a ens- tower Jo take any ertiold home himself. Iff it is only i neck-scarf they send it to him, though he lives five miles away, ^bey have two delivery vuns for that purpose, driven by uniformed coach men with flunkies by their sido to de liver the goods. Altogether, the style of the establishment is stunnihg. The prices are so high that men of modest means do not liny there. This is euqjffivVtob their satisfaction, as they do wot want tliut kind of custom. Nothing in their shop can lie bought at the regular prices. Col lars, for instance, which sell usually at 25 cents, are 50 cents there; and tlioj charge HO cents a pair for cuffs that are elsewhere ‘25 to 10. It is impossible to buy any sort of a scarf or necktie for less lb au $2, and the prices for smok- ing-Jackota, bath-robes, autl articles of that sort are positively enormous. They demand $28 for a bath-robe of Turkish toweling which could he bought anywhere else in town for *12 A few days agoafriendof mine dropped* in casually to order some shirts. The do# was swung opon by an obsequious uttembint, who bowed and poiuted to a clerk who was leaning gracefully on the t end of a counter. The clerk stepped forward, bent, and smiled. “I want some shirts,” said my friend. "Will you be kind enough to step this way, air?” and tho dork rubbed his hands together and walked softly down flie store. Tho customer followed until they ar rived at the office in the rear. There flic clerk was met by a member of the film, who was introduced to the cus tomer; The customer, rather aston ished at so much ceremony, was asked with great politenoss to step up-stairs, which ha did. On the way the propri etor asked hitn if he would exchange curds. This being accomplished, the next floor was reached, and proved to bo a richly-upholstered and heav ily-carpeted parlor. The proprietor touched an olcctrio bell, and conversed easily with his ountomer until the shirt- maker appeared. Ho was measured c arefijlly, while the head of tho firm walked casually lip and down tho room, as if lie had nothing whatever to do wiih tho shop. Ho said nothing about the shirt, ami seemed to treat tho call as purely social. After ho had been i measured, tho customer said: “You may mako me a sample shirt first." “We never mako less than half a dozen shirts, sir, atul our prico is *50 a doren," said tho shirt-maker laconically. “Hut I don’t earo to pay *25 for a half dozen shirts, and then find that they do not fit me; and I think it is an extortionate price, anyway." “Our customers," said the proprietor, g'-undly, “never stuqiect us of ill-fitting timm, and novel ask tho price." “1 don’t care whether thoy do or not," said my friend. “I want ouo shirt for a trial, and I will pay-yon *5 for it, and that is tho cud of tiio whole mat ter. If you want to do it you may; if not, don’t trouble yourself. Tliero are plenty of shirt-mukers iu town who ;*nurgo at least reasonable figures." The proprietor looked at him coldly, twirled his eye-glasses iu his fingers, and said: "Our customers, sir, uro not g nmlilers." Thereupon my friend freed his mind, stalked down-stairs, and out into tho street, while tho flunkey opened the door and bowed to him respectfully. And yet, this sort of snobbishness takes in Now.*york. for the firm is the most successful ono of its liuc. Bctfflan I.nee-llnkliig NehoolM. Tliero is considerable agitation in Belgium over tho laco-inaking schools. They are chiefly in the hands of differ- • ent religious communities- us the Apos- 1 tolines, the Maricoles, the .losophines, and the Collootinos—and are under- *tood« while touching tho art of laee- mukiiig, to give some primary instruc tion.
