Hawkins.—Because* we thought it. to bo for tbe best in terest of all concerned. A narrow guage will easily do ail the busi ness of the country though which it will ruu, and wilt cost at least ten per cent, less to operate it, in cluding transfer of freight to tbc Southwestern road at Amcricus, while the wear and tear is from ten to twonty per cent’less than a standard guage. Reporter—What is the esti mated difference in the cost of building and eqnippiug this road between n narrow ami standard guage ? Col. Hawkins—The total oost of a standard guage is estimated at $235,000,' while the estimated cost ot a narrow guage is $175,000, making a diflerencc in favor of a narrow gnage of $00,000. The in terest on $60,000, at six per cent, is $3,600 per year, which is saved to the stockholders, to say noth ing of the ten per cent, saved in operating the road, which can be either added to the dividends or deducted from the freights, whToh would make the freights ten per oent. less than could be afforded by n standard guage. Then there is the ten to twenty percent, saved in the wear and tear of machinery and rails, which would otherwise have tc lie deducted from the earn ings of the road- Besides these advantages there .are others. I have only allowed six per cent, on $60,000, when we all know that money is worth more than that in that half of tbo freight on cap for L_ well bo paid. Adopted. Tbc experts or arebiteots, to whom was referred the college building for examination reported that tbe building was perfectly safe. Reporter—Will not this change in tho guage alter your relations with tbe Central Railroad ? Col. Hawkins—I do not see why it should, nor do I think it will. It will not be built in antagonism to tho Central, and it will servo as a feeder to that road, and as such will be of value to that road. The Southwestern will bo our only out let, and we hope to make such ar rangements with It that freight can lie readily and easily transferred at their depot.
